It could be a Moss Mimic Mantis that originated in Costa Rica, but it seems that very little is known about this moss like bug.

Most insects are primarily attracted by heat, such as that produced by the human body or a light bulb, and are attracted by scent only secondarily. There are a few insects and bugs that are primarily attracted to scents, but the scent is used to find a mate or food, neither of which resembles any odor given off by humans. Most mouthwashes contain alcohol, so, even though the scent of the mouthwash would not be a deterrent, the slight amount of cooling that the alcohol would give might deter one or two insects, but only until the alcohol wears off, which is fairly quickly; in other words, you'd have to douse yourself with alcohol for a long period of time to be of any use against insects, and, by then, you'd be soaking wet, and probably in pain from the alcohol's burning sensation touching your eyes, lips, etc. You'd be much better off just staying inside.

I'm from Canada, and if it looks like a bee, but thinner (more like a wasp and dark) we call them "mud wasps." These little suckers can really sting and their sting has the same effect as a fire ant. They usually borrow into mud or wet sand and can float and swim across the water. If you go to your drug store ask the pharmacist for a good ointment to use. It will work and when my husband and I go camping or out in the boat we always take a tube.

They eat tender veggies in my garden and they hide in shady/moist compost heaps or under bricks, any where for shade. I consider them bad even though they do help w/ creating compost soil as you add plant scrapes onto your compost pile. I have to use those camping/cooking fire torch to turn them.

I first water my garden, wait a minute or 2, then I lift my mulch around the veggie bed and I'd see groups of them & I burn them. Be careful not to burn your feet, and have the garden hose right next to you just in case some dry leaves or whatever starts to burn a little. (That's why I water down everything so nothing catches on fire.)
