I think that modern inventions make people lazy because they make everything easier.

The car, for instance, allows people to travel long distances without having any physical strain on their body. The television is something that people sit in front of for hours on end until they have made an imprint of their butt on their couch and 7 hours a day of channel 35 is second nature. The fact that people can now watch TV shows in high definition and record, pause, rewind, or fast forward through their favorite programs isn't helping.

Video games also play a large part in laziness. For some people, video games can be just as addictive as drugs. I recently dealt with a customer at Gamestop that sold every single one of his games, and mentioned selling some of his articles of clothing, just so he could pay for his subscription to World of Warcraft. People have adapted to making the simple things simpler, and forms of entertainment such as participation in sports seems far fetched to many.

But modern technology also shares the blame with work. People have little free time in recent years because most of us spend most that time working. Such a dedication for the next paycheck brings more work home. when the work is finished, the only thing people want to do is lazily relax. Fast food restaurants are used more frequently to fit into a busy schedule, and exercise is a painful thought for many who just returned home from a long day.

The weaker a person's internal identity, the stronger the symbol they choose. Those that are unable to formulate their own symbolism, borrow other's symbolism. Groups that have no character of their own need to rely on character established by others.

now, as my take on it would be, it appears that people who claim to have seen aliens or UFOs aren't being kept in insane asylums, which accounts for the lack of information... instead, they are being filtered into our secondary schooling system to make druggies appear normal. it's the way our government is trying to hide just how screwed up our nation really is! ;-)

Through, by far, most of human history, and pre-history, non-violent methods of resolving conflicts have been far more common than violence. Violence, for this argument, are acts such as threats, stand-overs, ridicule, false rumour-mongering as well as the obvious: physical violence.

Persuasion tends to be usually non-violent, so can be classed as a humanly-progressive behaviour choice.

As violence usually only results in changing behaviours but not minds, I feel it can be assumed as most likely that through the enlightenment of spiritual and religious studies, and in more recent centuries from within philosophical, theosophical and psychology schools of thought, people developed skills in persuasion because violence is too costly in human terms, as well as inadaquate and innefficient for social interaction and adaption.

Considering the above notions, it seems to me that persuasion would predate higher language and record-keeping, let alone story-telling, so we cannot be sure, in a factual sense, of how, where or when persuasion developed. Belief is another matter...
