The ipod can be used for so much. First of all it can used for searching the web if you have wifi. You can listen music, and also download it on itunes straight from your ipod. You can also download music videos and movies on your ipod, as I am writing this I am using mine. You can also download apps from the app store. Some apps require wifi most don't. With the 4th generation you can do all of those stuff and use a camera for taking pictures and fact time. You can also take videos and download them to youtube. On both generations you can go on youtube which comes with it.

No you do not need WIFI to use the iPhone. The iPhone works with either 3G or WIFI. Some apps require WiFi to download or run depending on their size. I find wifi works best though and is faster. YouTube videos are extreemly clear and crisp with wifi.

You can set an alarm on your iPod by first going to clock application pre-installed on you iPod unit. Then click the alarm button at the bottom of your screen.
