Iver Johnson Firearms

Do you know the model name or number? I'm guessing it is a single shot Champion valued from $25 for a parts gun to $125 in Excellent condition with a plain rib. The version with a matte rib runs about $25 higher and the Trap Grade with a ventilated rib ranges from $100 to $275. Double barrel guns will be higher.

These guns, with two alpha digits at the end, indicate it was made between 1929 and 1939. Because it is an "XH," my guess is the late 30s.

It's really a Stevens model 94. Hercules was a Montgomery Ward brand name. Hercules was made by Iver Johnson from 1918-1943. I have a Montgomery Ward Hercules 16 ga. double. Does anyone know who made it. There are no brand or model numbers.SN X76777

take out the screw @ the bottom of the handle take handle off serial # is on left side

I just bought a 16 ga at the pawn shop and gave 72 dollars for it
they took 10 % off as it had been there a while. its old and rustic
but is tight and still shoots, it has a 30" barrel and is full choke
good for rabbit and squirrel but a misserable phesant gun.

The owl's head was an Iver Johnson trademark. The model 1900 was made from 1900 to 1947.

Actually, it was Johnson and Bye, the fore-runner of the Iver Johnson companies, 1871-1883.

Please tell me how you know exactly when it was made. Also tell me a bit more about it if you want to know the value. If it was made in 1887, it is most likely a spur-trigger .22 or .32 rimfire "bureau drawer special" valued between $25 and $125, depending on condition. However, the highest value given in a recent Standard Catalog of Firearms for any model Iver Johnson revolver in Excellent condition is $250 with most listing for $100-$150 in Good to Very Good condition. The first course of action to discern the value of a gun is to identify the make, model, manufacturing date, variation and condition. The book "Iver-Johnson Arms & Cycle Works Firearms 1871-1993" by W. Goforth, may help accomplish this. Then it's a simple matter of looking your gun up in one of the many firearm value books, such as the Blue Book of Gun Values, or the Standard Catalog of Firearms.

This is not the same company as Firearms International, Inc. of Houston. Firearms International, Washington, DC, doesn't get much space in the reference books since they didn't manufacture many guns, mostly imported rather inexpensive pieces. The country of origin should be marked someplace on the barrel or receiver. Most utility single shot .410's in working condition are worth $75 to $125, but since it will be difficult to find repair parts if these should break, it may be hard to sell for half that much.

The latest edition of Gun Digest's Guns & Prices says $25 in Poor condition (only useful as a parts gun) and $175 in Excellent. 410 or 20 gauge may bring a small premium in some markets.

From the 1880s to World War 1 millions of utility shotguns with hundreds of store names were imported to the US from Belgium and millions more were made in the US. Fine Damascus Steel suggests Belgian origin in this case. If you examine the bottom of the barrels you will probably find an oval around 'ELG*' which is a Belgian proof mark. A crown over this mark will indicate manufacture after 1893. While many of these store brands have been linked to a manufacturer (in some cases multiple manufacturers), Macey Co is not in my list.

The gun is chambered for the .32 Smith & Wesson cartridge, and that is what should be used in it. The cartridge went by a few other names, but .32 S&W is the only name it is loaded under currently. The guns typically sell for $100 tops. www.countrygunsmith.net

Iver Johnson made a bunch of utility grade single shotguns. Bill Goforth is undoubtedly the foremost expert on H&R and Iver Johnson products and has researched those brands extensively. That was made by Mossberg and is a version of their Model 42 rifle. Not sure how you came up with the year of manufacture. Anyway, there is some collector interest in the early Mossbergs that does cross over into the store brands. They didn't. Empire Arms Company was a trade name used on revolvers sold by Sears Roebuck. They were manufactured by Fyrberg Arms, Meriden Arms, and Crescent Fire Arms, and possibly other companies, perhaps including Iver Johnson.

That will depend on which Iver Johnson you have. The one most commonly encountered is the single shot Champion which will range from $25 for a parts gun to $150 in like-new condition. If it has a matted rib, add $25 in all grades. If it has a ventilated rib, those prices nearly double. Then there are the Skeeter Model and the Super Trap, both single shots which run from $375 to $1100. A Hercules Grade side by side double barrel lists from $250 to $550 and the Silver Shadow, an over-under double barrel manufactured in Italy for Iver Johnson, lists from $150 to $350.
