You must first remove the rear suspension assembly. It's simplest to disconnect the exhaust system at the 3-pointed flange nearest the front of the suspension cage and remove the subframe with the rest of the exhaust still in place through the cage. Disconnect the brake hose, handbrake cable and propshaft bolts on the differential. Very important: Remove the speedo sensor on the back of the diff (difficult) or disconnect cable (under rear seat) and feed cable back out through hole in floor). Support rear subframe on a big jack with spreader (assuming you already have the car on high axle stands or a lift) and undo the 8 bolts securing the 4 rubber subframe mounts. (You will of course have removed the rear wheels, and you'll see the mounts attached to the chassis member). And out she drops. Then to remove the diff you'll need to disconnect the half shafts, the inner fulcrum bearings mounts and then the four wired bolts in the top.

It means there is a fault in the fuel system or something that controls the fuel system. A quick check is to disconnect one of fuel supply lines at the front of the injector fuel rails and see if fuel is being pumped to the rails when you crank the engine (have something prepared to catch the fuel). If no fuel flow, it is a fuel supply problem (see below). If fuel is getting there you could have a computer that controls the injectors that went bad. (So sorry).

For fuel supply, this could be a pump relay, a main relay, a wiring problem or the fuel pump has gone bad. Start with the inertia relay (black box on r. door hinge post. Should be pushed down. Then go to main relay and then pump relay. If power from the pump relay to the fuel pump (located in the gas tank) and power at the fuel pump, your fuel pump has gone bad.

Weight of the XJS coupe is 4,000 pounds with V-12 engine (2+2 sport model, not the sedan)

I do know that only about 110,000 XJS's were produced from 1976 (first model year launch) through 1996 (last year), which tells me only about 10K per year were produced on average = pretty low production.

Possible headgasket leaking/failure. Possible head/block internal fracture. 'Pinhole' in pipe that deposite a very fine mist of coolant over a hot engine, this then evaporates leaving no trace! Do you have wet carpets inside or a smell of damp? if you do then you could have a leaky pipe or failed heater matrix - hours of fun!!!

Put a can of leak sealer in it and sell it quick!

I have a 1996 Jaguar XJS Convertible. It has a small backseat suitable for children.

Check your brake fluid level, if its low it can cause this problem. if that's not the case, take it to a mechanic asap.

in the trunk passenger side fuse panel in back by tail lights. it is a 20 amp fuse. also the relay is behind the black panel that holds the pressure rod for the trunk on the passenger side, it should be a silver relay.

1-5-3-6-2-4 is the firing order for straight 6 cylinder jaguar engines. Firing order for the V-12 is 1A-6B-5A-2B-3A-4B-6A-1B-2A-5B-4A-3B. 6 cylinder engines start the numbering from the back (firewall) of the engine, V-12engines start on the right bank(A) and start at the front. Right and left is determined as if you are sitting in the car.

Produced by a British manufacturer, the Jaguar XJS was first released onto the luxury automobile market in 1975. The line was discontinued however, in 1996, releasing only one model that year.

The sending unit is what usually breaks, It has a stem that sticks into the side of the transmission housing. It has a relativly fragile stem that gets snapped rather easy. They dont like speed bumps or poorly aligned tracks at a car wash. twice my speedo died because this little shaft seems to break easy with a sudden impact.

Park the vehicle on a level surface. Drain the oil, and change the filter. Add 4 quarts of oil and start the engine. Run for 45 seconds and shut down. Wait 45 minutes and check the oil level. Add as necessary to top it off keeping track of how much you add. You now know the capacity.

Yes XJS wheels will fit XJ6; I know for a 1987 Jaguar but not sure about any other years I have run XJS wheels on my 1987 XJ6

Both banks are 1-5-3-6-2-4. For the whole engine, it goes like this (A bank is on right hand side of engine when sitting inside): 1A-6B-5A-2B-3A-4B-6A-1B-2A-5B-4A-3B

The 1997 Jaguar power steering fluid reservoir is located on the back of the engine near the firewall. The top on the reservoir should be labeled as power steering fluid only.

If this is a V12, it's because the basic idle speed is too fast and the ECU shuts down the engine until it drops - and then the cycle repeats. This is usually because the idle speed controller is stuck open. You can try adjusting the idle speed on the 13mm screw on the side of the idle speed controller (back end of left hand bank on the water rail), but this won't fix a stuck ISC. You need to replace it (about £150) or attempt to repair it if you're really brave!

Anther possibility is an air leak in the inlet manifolds, downwind of the throttle - has much the same effect. You might hear a load hissing.

there is no glove box on a 1994, I have a 1991 and it does have a glove box

Which sender unit? The fuel sender is in the back of the fuel tank, in the boot, behind a carpet and the spare wheel. The ECU temp sender is on B bank thermostat housing on a V12, and in a similar position on the 6 cyl. The V12 oil pressure sender is on top of the V near the back, and on the left hand side of the engine low down on the 6 cyl. The crankshaft position sensor on the HE marelli is at the front of the crank, and the engine speed sensor is on the starter ring teeth at the back of the engine. THe road speed sensor is on the back of the differential for most XJSs; very early ones have it on the gearbox.

Move seat back, remove bolts at the front of the chair slide rails.

Then move the seat forward and remove the bolts at the rear of the seat slide rails.

Disconnect control connections (Lumbar, heater etc)

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank.

Had the same problem myself. Check the ignition feed to the fusebox in passenger footwell.
