I've looked at wiring diagrams for the power door locks on Cherokees. My Haynes manual shows two different diagrams: one for "1989 and earlier models with keyless entry" and one for "1990 and through 1996 models with keyless entry." I believe that '90 through mid-'92 used non-reprogrammable infrared transmitters/receivers while mid-'92 through '96 used reprogrammble infrared transmitters/receivers. So those two systems will have different parts/components, but, since all '90-'96 models share the same diagram, I think that the keyless entry receivers would be interchangeable. ('97 and later models used dealer reprogrammble radio transmitters). UPDATE: I have successfully upgraded the keyless entry module on my Cherokee. Mine is a 1990 Laredo but I'm pretty sure that the factory module was from the 1989 and previous models. Regardless, I installed a new overhead console from a 93-95 Grand Cherokee that included keyless entry. I chose this one from the junkyard because the 93-95's had the reprogrammable receivers. Anyway, all I did was run all the wires down the passenger side A-pillar, cut off the old receiver wires, and splice the new ones in. The 4 wires to the old receiver were pink (constant 12v power), black (ground), tan (went to unlock relay), and green (went to lock relay). Of course, the newer Grand Cherokee module had extra wires for bells and whistles that my older Jeep is not equipped with, so they just got taped off. Now, since my new receiver can be programmed to work with any Infrared transmitter, I had to figure that much out. The step-by-step process can be found by a simple Google search, but I can tell you that the driver's door must be left open during the process. I had not spliced anything but those 4 wires, so my receiver would not have been able to detect if any door was ajar. So, I searched and discovered that an extra yellow wire I had was supposed to go to the door jamb switches. It is a 12v feed, so the module knows a door is open if this wire is grounded. So, I just connected it to a good ground during the programming process and..... BINGO! everything works now.
Do you have to make a compete stop before engaging 4 wheel drive in a 1984 Jeep Cherokee?
Yes you do.
I assume it is to give you feedback that the vehicle locked, in case you are too far away from it to hear the locks themselves.
Jumping the neutral safety switch Jeep Cherokee 98?
Not advisable but cross the two wires on the non, clip side of the connector that are in the middle ( there are 4 )

6 and 7 in this diagram, the connector is high up on the firewall on the passengers side near the trans dipstick.
this will cause your vehicle to start in any gear, it doesn't seem dangerous, but it is.
On the passengers side of the trans about even with the front of the door fan shaped switch held on by two bolts.
I suggest taking it apart and cleaning it before you think about replacing.
The switch is nearly $300
To remove, flatten out the retaining washer side under nut, remove large nut, remove smaller ( 14mm ) bolt on the adjustment side. Connector for the wires is top left of engine at the firewall, black connector with about 8 wires, you will need to snip 3 or so zip ties to get it free.
cleaning is easy, 6 screws in back, pull apart, clean out all that old grease, pay special attention to the two contacts on the sweeper arm, they should move in and out easily as they have springs underneath and are the man contacts, apply new di-electric grease and reassemble.
reassemble and align before tightening, easiest way is to put trans selector in R and move switch until reverse lights come on.

Location of crank shaft 95 Jeep Cherokee?
The crankshaft sensor is mounted on the left side of the vehicle. On the bell housing upper left side.
The easiest way to remove it is with a Metric 11 socket and a 3 foot extension and possibly a universal joint to place between the extension and the socket.. I was able to locate and replace the sensor in about an hour (I am not a professional mechanic)
Why is the engine still overheating after you have replaced the water pump radiator and thermostat?
Have flushed complete cooling system replaced water pump radiator thermostat clutch fan added 2gal straight anti freeze then filled to capacity with water and truck is still over heating. What else could possibly be wrong
How do you replace the water pump on a 1990 Jeep Cherokee?
I could answer your question, and the others on here by telling you exactly how to replace your water pump - I just replaced my serpentine belt, fan clutch AND water pump on my 98 Jeep GC. But, I'm not. I believe in teaching someone to fish soo... go down to your local auto-parts store and buy the Haynes or Chilton book for your vehicle. Runs between 15 and 25 bucks and next to buying a OBD code reader, it's the most well spent money you'll ever spend on your vehicle.
The repair book not only tells you how to fix stuff on your vehicle, it also tells you WHERE stuff is... for the most part. And tells you how much fluid to add, and whether your mechanic is going to rip you off. Like my Jeep, it's fuel filter is life of vehicle and is therefor located IN the gas tank, but that doesn't stop Lube places from telling me I should change it. The book though, tells me to tell them to hit the road....
And if they ain't got the fan clutch wrench you need, if you do, then see if the Ford one willl work on yours..it did on mine and it was 25 versus almost 80 for the Jeep one. AND some auto-parts stores will loan you the fan clutch tool kit for your vehicle: lay down a returnable deposit and voila - free tool to use and when you bring tool back, you get 100 percent money back. Advanced Auto Parts does that.
You start by disconnecting the positive battery cable. Then drain your radiator by loosening the petcock fitting on the bottom of the radiator. Drain fluid into a container and dispose of properly. You will have to remove both cooling fans, belt, the power steering unit, airbox, disconnect radiator hoses, there are only a few bolts that secure the water pump. NOTE: Always replace the thermostat when servicing the cooling system. It is a moderate job, taking three to five hours depending on your level of mechanical ability. It is by no means hard, and you should purchase a manual for torque specks and other important information. If you have a friend with mechanical knowledge, have them help you. Mechanics are simple, just maintain you composure when things get frustrating, and they will.

How do you get to 2001 Jeep Cherokee cabin filter?

How do you replace and O2 sensor in a 99 jeep C Cherokee?
buy a haynes manual and follow the instructions
or, follow the exhaust pipes until you find the sensors (there are 2 of them) they screw in and have a thin wire running out of them. follow the wire to the nearest connection, disconnect it and turn the sensor out of the pipe. if it's really rusted, use tons of penetrant - WD 40 or the like. You absolutely don't want the sensor so snap or the threats to get damaged.

Why would the airbag light come on intermittently on 1998 Cherokee while driving.?
Problem with the SRS. Seek professional help. Not a DIY repair.
Why would the back up lights not be working on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic?
Check fuses first.
It is on the same circuit as the brake lights, but if they are not working, and the bulbs are good your switch needs cleaning or adjustment.
Attempt this first since the switch costs nearly $300 bucks.
On the passengers side of the trans just behind the bell housing there is a fan shaped switch, loosen the 12mm bolt ( smaller of the two, and rotate the switch while a friend checks the lights. this problem is usually accompanied by an occasional inability to start the vehicle, but can be cured by jiggling the shifter.
While adjusting the switch make sure that the vehicle will start in park as well, remember to block the wheels while testing the back up lights, engine off, key in run but not start, shifter in reverse, move switch until lights come on.
Once you find this spot, hold it in place and have your helper check to make sure it will start. This may take several tries to get both working correctly.
If you have no luck the switch may be dirty, this happens a lot. Hold the post to the bottom large bolt still while you loosen the nut, then remove it, then remove the 12mm adjusting bolt on top, remove the wire connector and pull the switch away, remove the bolts on the switch and separate the halves, use electrical contact cleaner and maybe some q-tips to clean all the copper connections completely apply di-electric grease and reassemble, refit to the trans and readjust so all functions work, this switch controls back up and start safety.
Caution! always hold that bottom bolt while tightening the large nut, this is connected to the gear adjuster and you could damage the internals if it isn't secured while you do it.
I would check the bulbs in the tail lights first. Your Brake switch is working ,because of the third brake light is coming on.Ususally all the brake lights are on the same fuse.... Thanks Dom
AnswerCenter window light is on a separate circuit. Manufacturers did that so you don't lose all the brake lights at once. Check connections at brake switch and fuses. If ok look for broken wire in harness...............good luck, Mike
