How do you change a neutral safety switch on a Jeep Cherokee?

On the passengers side of the trans about even with the front of the door fan shaped switch held on by two bolts.

I suggest taking it apart and cleaning it before you think about replacing.

The switch is nearly $300

To remove, flatten out the retaining washer side under nut, remove large nut, remove smaller ( 14mm ) bolt on the adjustment side. Connector for the wires is top left of engine at the firewall, black connector with about 8 wires, you will need to snip 3 or so zip ties to get it free.

cleaning is easy, 6 screws in back, pull apart, clean out all that old grease, pay special attention to the two contacts on the sweeper arm, they should move in and out easily as they have springs underneath and are the man contacts, apply new di-electric grease and reassemble.

reassemble and align before tightening, easiest way is to put trans selector in R and move switch until reverse lights come on.

Where is the Back up light switch on 98 jeep Cherokee classic?

It is on the same circuit as the brake lights, but if they are not working, and the bulbs are good your switch needs cleaning or adjustment.

Attempt this first since the switch costs nearly $300 bucks.

On the passengers side of the trans just behind the bell housing there is a fan shaped switch, loosen the 12mm bolt ( smaller of the two, and rotate the switch while a friend checks the lights. this problem is usually accompanied by an occasional inability to start the vehicle, but can be cured by jiggling the shifter.

While adjusting the switch make sure that the vehicle will start in park as well, remember to block the wheels while testing the back up lights, engine off, key in run but not start, shifter in reverse, move switch until lights come on.

Once you find this spot, hold it in place and have your helper check to make sure it will start. This may take several tries to get both working correctly.

If you have no luck the switch may be dirty, this happens a lot. Hold the post to the bottom large bolt still while you loosen the nut, then remove it, then remove the 12mm adjusting bolt on top, remove the wire connector and pull the switch away, remove the bolts on the switch and separate the halves, use electrical contact cleaner and maybe some q-tips to clean all the copper connections completely apply di-electric grease and reassemble, refit to the trans and readjust so all functions work, this switch controls back up and start safety.

Caution! always hold that bottom bolt while tightening the large nut, this is connected to the gear adjuster and you could damage the internals if it isn't secured while you do it.

Is it difficult to replace the oil pressure sensor on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic?

I have a 1998 Cherokee sport and the oil pressure sensor is located just to the right of the oil filter (About eight inches over or so) and a few inches down (Left side of lower engine block). It about the size of a thum drive and as round as a quarter. You can reach reach it without taking out any parts, but it might be a little difficult to install unless you have small hands. Mine broke off a few weeks ago and I'm getting ready to replace it. I'll let you know how it goes.

What is the normal operating temperature for a 95 model jeep Cherokee?

temp should be 190 for a 4.0 ....

AlsoIt depends on the thermostat that you have installed. If it's a 180 degree thermostat, the engine should run at right around 180 degrees. Recognize that stock engine temp gauges are notoriously inaccurate so don't blame the thermostat if everything else seems ok but the gauge says the temp is off.

How do you take out the center console on a 1997 Jeep Cherokee sport?

Pull shift lever handle straight up and off the lever.

Use small screw driver to wedge out lever bezel, pull out bulb, remove bezel.

You see there are 2 screws below you have to remove.

Use small screw driver to wedge out 4wd handle bezel, pull out bulb, remove bezel.

remove 2 screws at the bottom of the storage bin.

You may have to pull 4wd shift all the way backwards.

Console should then come out.

Why is your 96 Jeep Cherokee overheating?

Overheating can be caused by anything that decreases the cooling system's ability to absorb, transport, and dissipate heat, such as a low coolant level, loss of coolant (through internal or external leaks), poor heat conductivity inside the engine because of accumulated mineral deposits in the water jackets or radiator, a defective thermostat that doesn't open, poor airflow through the radiator, a slipping fan clutch, an inoperative electric cooling fan, a collapsed lower radiator hose, an eroded or loose water pump impeller or even a defective radiator cap.

The cooling system is a group of related parts that depend on proper function from each of its component parts to keep the engine cool. Service the cooling system and replace any under-performing or suspected weak parts. Any component part of the cooling system that is not fully doing its job will stress the others and your cooling system will overheat. The most important maintenance item is to flush and refill the coolant periodically. Coolant should be replaced every 36,000 miles or every three years. Anti-freeze has a number of additives that are designed to prevent corrosion in the cooling system, but they have a limited life span. The corrosion causes scale that eventually builds up and begins to clog the thin flat tubes in the radiator and heater core, causing the engine to eventually overheat.

If you have covered all the points listed above and still have overheating issues, inspect the head for cracks and head gasket for leaks. Exhaust gasses entering the coolant can raise the temperature of the coolant or cause steam pockets in the coolant that will temporarily block the flow of coolant.

How can you fix your heater in a 1996 jeep Cherokee the air and heat will only come out from defrost no matter what the selector is on?

The mode door is vacuum controlled in the GC and the default fail position is defrost only. You most likely have either a vacuum leak or a broken vacuum line. There is a vacuum junction under the passenger side dash that kids like to kick and pull the vacuum line loose. That's the first place to check.

Sometimes your air bag light comes on and then all of your gauges go dead Then sometimes if you drive over a bump they will come back on Is this a wiring or computer problem your Jeep is a 1998 Cherok?

This question is asked and answered on Yahoo Answer Singapore: http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061104202526AA31f9s This is a common problem with the Jeep wranglers that causes the gauges to have intermittent operation. Jeep has issued 2 TSBs about it. 08-15-99 is the latest and basically states that the male terminals on the cluster get corroded. There is a cleaning procedure and some small parts to get to correct the problem. I just ordered the kit to do a 2nd one in 2 weeks.

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 08-20-98 REV. A, DATED OCTOBER 2, 1998, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES AND NOTED IN THE BOUND TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN BOOK, PUBLICATION NUMBER 81-699-99003. THIS IS A COMPLETE REVISION TO THE PROCEDURE.

SUBJECT:

Erratic, Intermittent Cluster Operation/Intermittent Air Bag Warning light.

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves installing a repair harness containing a revised instrument cluster connector.

MODELS:

1998 - 1999 (TJ) Wrangler

1998 - 1999 (XJ) Cherokee

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may exhibit an intermittent illumination of the air bag warning light or an intermittent tachometer or speedometer drop out. An Airbag Electronic Control Module (AECM) fault code - "No Cluster CCD BUS" message will be present.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using the DRB III(R), read and record all active and stored fault codes in the AECM. This condition is caused by minor oxidation of the BUS circuit terminals at the instrument cluster connector. Electrical terminals will show signs of oxidation, which will appear as darkened lines or marks on the cluster male terminals. These often appear as gray or black marks rather than the appearance of oxidation or corrosion usually associated with higher current carrying circuits. This condition will set a "NO CLUSTER CCD BUS" message. The fault code will usually be stored and not active. THIS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WILL NOT ADDRESS FUEL OR OIL PRESSURE GAUGE ISSUES. If this fault code is present, either active or stored perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 05016261AA Cluster Connector Patch Harness

1 04856975 Electric Contact Cleaner

2 04778570 Heat Shrink Tubing
