What might be wrong with a 1997 Grand Cherokee that won't idle?

Well, mine does this if my battery has died for longer thatn a few minutes. Keep your foot on the gas and force it to idle, not overreving too much. The computer should wake up after a few minutes. Slowly let your foot off the pedal and see if it will stay on. If it tries to die then keep it on and it should mellow out. ~mac

The idle control rests everytime you start the vehicle.

The computer will not change this setting until the vehicle is started again.

Try this:

On the back of the trottle body is the IAC Valve (Idle Air Control).

These get clogged with carbon and prevent the correct amount of air to enter the throttle body during idle creating the need to hold the gas pedal down to start and manually maintain idle.

These are around $50, but they can be cleaned.

Here's how to save yourself some money.

Remove the IAC by:

1. disconnecting the negative battery terminal (this will prevent any electrical damage and reset the computer).

2. Remove the large rubber hose connecting the air box to the throttle body.

3. Remove the air collector on the top of the throttle body (19mm wrench).

4. Carefully remove the wire harness plug from the valve.

5. Using a T20 torx bit, remove the valve from the back of the throttle body.

Inspect the valve and the "O" ring for signs of obvious damage.

Use either carburetor, or TB cleaner and paper towels to clean the piston tip, sleeve and the socket in the throttle body the valve seats in.

DO NOT TURN OR ROTATE THE PISTON!

Re-install the valve, connect the harness, re-install the air collector and air box tube. Re- connect the battery.

Try starting the vehicle with your feet off the pedals.

How do you replace the oil pressure sensor on a 2003 jeep grand Cherokee?

Answer:

Located under the vehicle by the crankshaft pulley and oil pan. The sensor basically screws in the block and should have an o-ring that seals oil from leaking. I believe the size is either 20 or even 22mm socket and has to be a deep socket to fit over the sensor to the nut. Be careful not to damage plastic plug in part of the sensor when tightening. Also has a two prong connector use a flat head to unplug and remove and replace sensor do not over tighten just nice and snug will do.

How do you fix the rear wiper on a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from getting stuck on the lip of the rear window?

There is a little black stopper there, known as a ramp in the parts catalog. It stops the wiper arm and blade from going to low and getting stuck on the lip. The part number is 55155124 and goes for about $17.5, depending on the dealership. However, it is not unheard of somebody placing a larger size wiper blade if they are out of stock and unaware of the consequences.

How do you remove the 1 and a half nut holding the clutch fan onto the pulley on a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8?

The right answer is to go to autozone and rent,,, Yes I said rent the right wrench set that is flat and is carried at all autozones. When you are finished using it, just return it back to Autozone for a full refund. Yup that is how their rental works. It becomes free.

usally with a 1&1/2 " wrench, but some are left hand thread - but some need a blunt chizel 2 tap on the edge of the nut.& a LARGE pair of channel locks.

I have the same problem I Knew the nut turns counter clockwise. How do you hold the Fan Pulley to break the nut loose? Is there a special tool? where can i get one? I tried reinstalling the serpentine belt an add pressure to the belt to hold the pulley to break the nut. this did not work.

I watched the mechanic change the water pump on my 94 jgc and he use a special spanner for the nut and to hold the mount under the pully (pulley may be held on this bracket with 4 bolts or may be moulded to the shaft). The new pump had the pulley mounted to the shaft so he use a very large channel lock, but I dont wee why you can't use a chain or strap wrench around the pulley to hold it. just be careful not to put too much pressure on it and mar the surface or put it out of round. PS the repair including a new delco pump only cost me $300 CAD so shop around and you may find it is not worth the aggravation of doing it yourself

it can be done by using the correct (need not be exact) sized open end wrench and a section of pipe (or other solid object). with the wrench on the fan nut, strike the end of the wrench in the direction that you want to turn. combined with the force of the serpentine belt wrapped around the pulley and the tensioner, there will be an impact effect on the nut and the nut will break free -- without damaging the belt. it should only take 4-5 really good hits. use the same method for tightening.

If a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee airbag light come on after being serviced what could be the problem and how expensive will it be to fix?

What was serviced and by who? There is no way anyone can tell you what is wrong and how much to fix. The fact is that something is wrong with the SRS and you must get it fixed. The air bag could deploy at any time or not at all. Take it to your dealer.

Answersounds like your service tech may have been probing wires and probed an airbag wire a definite factory fix

How do you replace a hinge pin bushing on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee front door?

You can purchase replacement hinge pin and bushing kits from Napa, O'Reilly, Etc. Part numbers are: Dorman 38422 NAPA 675-1594 They are about $5.99 per pin, (2) required per door.

Then you have to install as listed below on digitalrevo.

There is a hinge kit available from dealers- my understanding is that it's pretty expensive, and replaces the complete hinge, so it requires welding a new hinge to the door. My door was rusted out at the bottom anyway, so I bought a complete replacement from a salvage shop.

Here's a guide to replace the door pins and bushings. http://www.digitalrevo.com/jeep/doorpins.html

Digitalrevo is not an active website as of 12/24/07
