What was the northern free labor system in the nineteenth century?

When slave labor decreased in the Upper south, diversification of agriculture was accompanied by a more rapid rate of urban and industrial development. This resulted in Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky residents divided on the decision of the Deep South's plantation economy or industrializing the free labor system in the Upper South. In the ideal "free labor" system, working for wages was seen as only a temporary step towards owning one's own workshop or farm. Economic growth seemed to offer everyone a chance to become his own boss. This "republican" vision of a community of productive, independent families inspired many Americans, especially in the North and the growing Midwest. During the Civil War, farmers, workers and businessmen united to protect the "free labor" system against the threat posed by slavery. This free labor coalition built the Republican party and filled the ranks of the Union Army.

What is a union of all the workers in one industry?

How did national trades union affect workers?

Unions provide workers with collective bargaining power. The alternative is to cross ones fingers and hope that companies and corporations will be nice, play fair, and give raises when the cost of living goes up because "it's the right thing to do". I think anyone who's been an employee knows the likelihood of that happening.

Sometimes unions do go too far when they shutdown essential services too long. But thanks to unions, most of us enjoy a 40 hour week (the norm before unions was 50 to 70 hours). As unions shrink so too does the benefits employers "give" to their workers. To find a job with a pension and health benefits is difficult and the unions are being slowly driven out of existence by corporations and government. Neither one of the above has any interest at all in having workers that have the power to strike, or to engage in collective bargaining. The interest of the people who are already rich and/or powerful (gov/corps) interest is in funnelling more money into the pockets of the CEO's and stock holders and out of the hands of workers. Anti-union stories in the media, which corporations and the government control, are all about convincing the average (non union) American worker that unions are bad, destructive and evil and so they use resentment to turn the average person against the unions also. By and large, it is working, which is unfortunate because most of what the media says about unions is patently FALSE. So as the American unions go, so does the American worker.

What established that employees did not have to join an union?

The National Labor Reltions Act specifies that some workers have the right to join or form unions or to refrain from doing so. No one can be compelled to join a union or support its aims, only to pay dues.

How do you vote out a labor union at work?

The National Labor Relations Act provides the legal framework for private-sector employees to organize into bargaining units in their workplace, or to dissolve their labor unions through a decertification petition.

Information Officers at any NLRB Regional Office will answer questions regarding representation or decertification petitions and provide assistance with completing petition forms. To file a petition to form a union or to decertify an existing one, parties must file the forms at the Regional Office that has jurisdiction over the area where the workplace is located. Go to the page titled Locating Our Offices to find a Regional Office.

The filing of a petition seeking certification or decertification of a union should be accompanied by a sufficient showing of interest to support such a petition. Support is typically demonstrated by submitting dated signatures of at least 30% of employees in the bargaining unit in favor of forming a union, or to decertify a currently recognized union.

For more detailed information on representation petitions, read The NLRB and You - Representation Cases (PDF*).

For more information on filing a union organization or decertification petition, read the Procedures Guide.

What phrase best describes the purpose of labor unions during the Industrial Revolution?

To protect and promote workers rights

Since workers had no statutory rights at the time, that phrase makes no sense.

Unions attempted to give members a voice in decisions about pay and work conditions.

How does a group of employees get represented by a labor union?

IF they are not supervisors, and ...

IF they have interests and career paths in common ... then they can distribute "show of interest cards" for folks to sign. If more than 30% of the folks in the group of common interests (potential bargaining unit) ask for representation, then the employer CAN recognize a union or demand that NLRB supervise a secret ballot election.

If the election results in MORE that 50% of those who vote saying "union yes" then EVERYONE in the unit is represented by the union. If 50% or less vote union yes, the union loses, and there can be no election for that unit for another year.

If the group / unit is 100 employees, and only 60 show up to vote, if 31 vote union yes, then all 100 are in a union. Not 31, not 60, all 100.

American Federation of Labor?

Was the first federation of labor unions in the United States. It was founded in Columbus, Ohio, by an alliance of craft unions disaffected from the Knights of Labor, a national labor association and led by Samuel Gompers; an alliance of skilled workers in craft unions; concentrated on bread-and-butter issues such as higher wages, shorter hours, and better working conditions.

What was the purpose of labor unions?

The purpose of labor unions were to people to work and not lose their jobs.

They were pretty much groups that made sure everyone was being treated right in a work place

Unions have no power to keep workers from being dismissed. Employees cannot "lose their jobs" since jobs belong to the employer, not the worker.

Unions have no power to assure that members are being treated "right", only the power to complain after the fact if the employer violates the words of the contract. If the union could get all of the contract provisions it thought "right", it cannt enforce provisions not in the current contract.

Why were the years 1923-1929 bad times for organized labor unions?
