I absolutely love the first answer LOL! but I'll throw a little extra info in.

Reading for extended periods of time stimulates certain cognitive and creative centers of the brain and literally "exercises" them and to a far greater extent then watching TV ever would. Cognitive is "understanding" and creative is brainstorming. Having good cognitive and creative abilities lets you recognize and find solutions to problems in everyday life. The old term "use it or lose it" is true: to keep your muscles and mind sharp you must exercise them.

At least I think so, I could be wrong. The gist of it is that reading a good novel or even an interesting magazine will help keep you sharp.

Reading gives you insight into how other people live and think, so that you can use ideas you've gained in practical life. My example (which may be out there to some) is that, in reading about people who lived in sod houses with dirt floors, I discovered the way to prevent dust blowing while sweeping. Sprinkle water on the area before sweeping. Also, I never could have done the traveling in real life that I have while being in the time and place of the books I read. China, Africa, England and other places will never be the same old same old that the geography books present.

While reading may not be a cure for neurological diseases, it is definitely a preventative measure, with the added benefit of increase intelligence, or at least the information stored that the inate intelligence can bring to bear.

There are a couple of ways.

• Make up a silly sentence with the first letter of each word being the first letter of a country you're trying to remember. Like "Charlie Used Steve's Motorcycle" for the 3 countries in North America (Canada, United States, Mexico).
• Make a study deck - write the name of each country on one side of an index card. You can leave the back blank or write a hint if you want. Flip through the deck and see how many you know. Once you remember a country, turn that card upside down and put it at the back of the deck. Any you miss, shuffle those into the middle of the deck so you will see them again. When all the cards are upside down, you know your countries!

Here are some ways to concentrate when it's noisy:

• try earplugs
• try moving to a quieter place
• try an iPod or other device with soft music playing -- loud music would be just as noisy as the outside noise
• try using your finger or an object like a ruler to follow the lines of reading and focus your concentration

Grouping or "Chunking" is when you divide a lot of information down into smaller bits that are easier to remember. It is a good way to memorize large amounts of data.

Here are some ideas:

• Split large groups of numbers or letters into groups of three-four
• Group things that are similar together to help remember them
• Split the information into groups or categories, and make an outline - then, memorize each "heading" one at a time, and soon you will have all of it

Some generalizations you can make about 2 tennis ball 6 marbles and 1 orange would include:

1. each one has a purpose or use
2. each can be held in a person's hand
3. they are all round
4. they all would likely roll
5. they are all different sizes
   
6. they are all different colors
7. only one would likely bounce if thrown or dropped against a hard surface; the tennis balls
8. two are used in games: tennis balls; marbles
9. only one is a food; the orange
10. only one of these might be collected; the marbles
11. only one has multiple pieces inside; the orange slices
12. only one has a natural skin; the orange
13. two types have coverings; the orange and the tennis balls
14. two types are manufactured items; 1 comes from nature

Here are some reasons to study animals:

• Anything you study makes you smarter!
• Animals are the most numerous form of life on our planet, so studying them helps us understand the world
• Many animals are helpful, so you need to know which ones might be useful to you
• Many animals can be harmful, so you need to know which ones might hurt or kill you
• Studying animals helps us understand ourselves better, since we're also animals
• Studying animals helps us understand how all living things are necessary to the environment

The student is influenced by its family and school. I think both the family and school builds the student, makes its life. At school, students are influenced socially by their friends and intelectually by their teachers. Teachers play an important role by means of teaching them and introducing them into a whole new world of knowledge (although this only happens when the student is willing to learn). Their friends are the ones who will teach them how to deal with the people of their own age, it is with friends that a student builds a relationship, builds trust, builds communication skills, builds a perceptive of the world. At home, students are influenced my their parents, by their brothers/sisters or other family elements, and by the environment. Parents are the ones who raised them, educated them (besides the obvious, they were the ones who brought the student to the world). Of course, all parents want their sons/daughters to succeed at school and therefore they should try to create an adequate atmosphere at home for the enrichement of the student. At home I suppose students must feel comfortable to speak "how" they want to and expose their points of view, they must be loved and love, they must rest, they must spend time with themselves in order to discover more about the human being they are trying to become... Brothers/sisters have an influence because it is with them that students estabilish a more tighter relationship than with their friends (although most time it doesnt seem like). I think it is very very very important to have a good atmosphere at home since this is the place where students will spend a great deal of their time as young adults; it is also important to have a good relationship with the family, be at ease to talk. All in all, students are equally influenced by family and school although the type of influence is different. It is important that the student is exposed to all sorts of emotions and situations to build up into an experient adult, wise and smart. (this is an opinion not based on any scientific knowledge, it is just a meer opinion!)

Answer

This is a very good question. What ever a student does at school will affect what is going on in their personal life. What ever is happening in a students personal life, will inevitably affect what happens at the school. A student must learn the meaning of moderation and balance. I am a firm believer that a student needs to balance their time and focus. Students need time to be on campus attending classes, they need time for appropriate study (a lot), they need time to socialize with friends, they need time for family, and they need time just to be alone. The key is how they balance their activities. At times the scales get tipped, because of time requirements needed for each category, but all in all they can be balanced appropriately even though at times there will need to be a readjustment according to priority.

Now as to which category mentioned above has the greatest influence on the student is directly related to the student himself/herself. At a young age children can be influenced by a number of variables, however when that child turns into an adult, I believe that individual becomes responsible for what influences them. Now this latter statement can turn into a hot debate among people and groups, as to whether it is nature or nurture, (genetic, or environmental) or a combination of all of them. Still, I believe it will depend on where the students current passions lie, whether family led, school led, peer led, or self led. Not an easy answer to come up with huh?
