When children are younger, parents can make them go to school by making sure they get on the bus, driving them to school, etc. Usually, though, problems with attendance don't begin until children are older, possibly middle school age, but more so high school age, when it's difficult to make them go. At that point, government officials usually step in, but still, if a high school student doesn't care to go to school, chances of him or her learning much after being made to go are slim.
Rather than make them go, a more productive approach is to talk to them and find out why they do not want to attend. They could be bored, see no point to what they are being taught, feel as if they are failures, or any number of things. It could even be that they feel as if they are in a power struggle and are rebelling. Getting to the root causes and getting the student's cooperation is much more likely to produce positive results than making them attend, especially when the root problems need to be addressed in order for them to learn once they are there.
This is not to say that parents and school officials should let the student off the hook about attendance. It just means that getting to the root cause of the problems is much more likely to get them to learn once they attend than simply forcing students to be in school physically.

So, if the student wants to do better in algebra class, for example, the tutor must find out what is wrong. One place to start would be to help the student with sample problems or homework problems to start to get a feel for how much the student knows. Learning gaps from the past may start to emerge. These learning gaps will help you put together a plan to get the student back on track.

Here is a great method of studying anything - vocabulary, terms, dates, formulae, whatever you need to memorize!
• Buy some index cards -- some people like to cut each card in half and have smaller cards.
• On one side of each card, write the word, term, date, whatever you have to learn. On the other side, write the answer.
• Keep this deck of cards with you all the time!
• Whenever you have a few minutes of time - when waiting in line at the fast food kiosk, while riding the bus, car, or subway, or when waiting in the doctor's office - whenever you have a moment free, go through the deck. You don't have to do the whole deck at once, which is the beauty of the plan!
• If you know the answer to a card without looking, turn that card upside down and put it at the very back of the deck.
• If you don't know a card, study the answer on the back of the card for a few moments. Then, place that card back into the middle of the deck so that you will see it again later.
• Once all of the cards are upside down, you will know the information!

Yes Research: John Hartie (University of Auckland) meta-analysis of thousands of educational studies around the world published in a book 'Visible Learning'. He finds that homework, particularly in primary school is next to useless for improving learning outcomes. Primary and Intermediate teachers that enforce homework are simply wasting children's and parents' time that could be better spent ... doing almost anything. Why do students feel they have to 'cram' for tests?
Most students who stay up all night and "cram" information into their heads are just very disorganized - they did not spend the time they needed to study ahead, and have not kept up with their work a little bit at a time. This is especially common in college, where many kids are out on their own for the first time, and do not have the maturity and discipline to do their work first before they party. Most of them eventually learn that it is much easier on them if they do a little work every day instead of waiting until the last minute, although some people never do learn this, and spend their lives putting everything off and stressing themselves out.
There are also students who are not confident - these students really do know their material, and have kept up with their studies, but they just don't believe they are prepared. This sort of cramming is common in high-stress situations such as medical school and graduate classes, where a low grade could mean the difference between staying in school and getting dropped from the class.
