Leather wasn't invented, it really evolved over time. Animal skins are one of humanity's oldest materials available. From the time the first deer, etc., was killed, people tried to use every part of the animal. They scraped skin could be dried and cut into strips for lacing things (like other animal skins!) together, it could be used for drum heads, clothing, etc. Over time, a variety of techniques were developed to make the skins last longer and remain flexible. In medieval Europe, for example, the hides were cured with animal feces.

Real natural leather. It is much more eco-friendly to grow a cow and process leather than make synthetic leather look-a-like materials. When you use a cow for leather you end up with lots of meat you can eat and when you make synthetic fabric you end up with petroleum waste. Also, cows take a few years to grow up and petoleum renews nowhere near as fast. Lastly, natural leather looks best and lasts longer than sythetics.

It could. Depending on the thinner that is used, it's always best to follow the instructions on the label and always test it in an inconspicuous area of the material first.

I found a an article on bonded leather in a emag called Furniture Today but nothing that answers this question specifically.

Bonded leather is an economical material but does not stand up to flexing therefore it is a poor substitute and would not make it durable at all for furniture. It can be used for tabletops or picture frames where flexing is not an issue.

I started looking around after I visited Rooms To Go and the sales rep failed to highlight that this is not genuine leather. I found out by accident on their website which simply states it is Bonded Leather (up to us to educate ourselves I guess). The sales guy had explained to us that it is leather spliced and supported on the underside and even tried to sell us leather protection. This is W.R.O.N.G. it tells me that the retailer is not being truthful by not disclosing the facts about the product.

The product is barely over 2 years old going by the article in Furniture today and there is little evidence of it being tested for durability. So if you're buying this product you are field testing it for the stores I guess!

There's not really a "why" answer to this. (And what would you do if you knew "why"?) Somehow, the brain associates some random thing with sex, and once that association's been made, well ... there it is. Leather. Not "Bonded Leather", not "Bycast Leather", not leather that has been split and glued to a backing and called "top Grain". Just: Leather. Best are semi-aniline or aniline dyed hides.
