When did large balloons start appearing at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?

Macy's introduced the first large, inflated balloons in 1927. Among the characters were Felix the Cat, a caricature of singer/actor Eddie Cantor, a dinosaur, a group of cavemen, and assorted turkeys, chickens and ducks.

The first balloons were made entirely of rubber and filled with air, rather than helium (which was introduced in 1928), so they had to be held upright by long poles. For this reason, their designer, Tony Sarg, referred to these first balloons as "upside-down marionettes."

Did Macys ever lose a parade balloon?

Macys lost a parade balloon in 2005 and it was Garfield.

Macy's has lost a few balloons over the years. Early in the parade's history, the balloon handlers would release all the balloons at the end of the parade, sending them skyward. Macy's then offered $100 bounty on each returned balloon as a sales gimmick. Not all the balloons were returned, and one floated so high it became wrapped around a small airplane wing, causing the plan to crash. Macy's ended the practice after that.

Why was Snoopy in the Thanksgiving Day parade?

Some questions really don't have a better answer than "why not?"

The balloons were introduced primarily because live animals (which had been used in the first few parades) were messy and problematic. They've always been based mainly on pop-culture icons (the very first one was Felix the Cat), so when the Peanuts comic strip became popular, Snoopy was a natural addition to the lineup.
