Skintone means how light or dark your skin is - it has nothing to do with colour, it's just the shade.

Undertone means what colour your skin is - there are yellow undertones and pink undertones. You can be either, or both.

This is how you find out (approximately) what your undertones are:

Look at the veins on your wrist / arm. If they appear blue, you have pink undertones. If they appear green, you have yellow undertones. If you can't tell, you probably have both pink and yellow undertones.

For example, the Asian race usually has very prominant yellow undertones, while the European race are half and half - some pink and some yellow undertones. Tanned / olive-skinned people usually have yellow, while very dark-skinned people usually have pink.

Aveda does not test on animals, EXCEPT if there's a totally new ingredient that must, by law, be tested on animals. Rather, they test on people.

They also do not contract with other companies to test on animals for them. (Some companies do this--they advertise they don't test on animals but contract animal testing out.)

The reality of cosmetics testing on animals: right now, there are thousands of cosmetics ingredients that have been tested on animals and proven safe. There are only so many ways you can make a cosmetic product: a lipstick is going to contain waxes, moisturizers and pigments whether it costs $2, $14 or $35. There isn't going to be any kind of a groundbreaking new discovery in makeup that requires blinding two hundred rabbits to prove its safety--the only real difference between the hot, stylish new eye shadow you bought two years ago and the hot, stylish new eye shadow you bought last week is the color--so I think everyone should just stop routine animal testing of cosmetics. We already know everything we're going to from it.

There aren't any...at least not yet. I checked with Macy's in the mall and they don't carry it (they referred me to the Kansas City store). There isn't an Ulta in Topeka either, unfortunately. And the Bare Escentuals company has not put a store in the mall yet (wish they would). So for now, Kansas folks have to rely on the store in Town East (Wichita), Ulta (Wichita), Macy's (Kansas City) and Sephora (Kansas City, Overland Park, Wichita). I have been purchasing from the website and from ebay when I can't get to Wichita.

Just above your lowerlashes is your waterline. Apply the eyeliner carefully. Make sure that it is waterline safe and that you don't poke your eye with it. You can also apply it to your upper lashline. Eyeliner adds definition to your eyes.

There are micro-beads in it that burst upon applying. They are quite delicate and as you rub them in, the colour within comes out. Almay was quite smart in marketing this product, because there are a lot of stupid people out there. All this product contains is a base foundation. Which is a runny white/grey lotion type substance. All companies use base foundation for all of their products and this is what the colour is added to in order to make the different shades. But Almay just made three shades (light, medium, dark) for their Smart Shade product and put the colour in beads that burst. This does NOT match your skin tone perfectly at all. And users will find it gives very little coverage because the base foundation used here is quite runny. In fact, if you use the medium, and your skin tone is slightly darker, it will actually make you look a little paler. And vice versa for light skin tones. When people initially use this product they are too convinced by the trick, that they ignore the fact that it doesn't do the job of a good foundation! Almay is simply woo-ing people with a magic trick. If you own this product, I suggest putting some of the product on your palm and lightly rubbing it around, you will see a brown runny substance appear that certianly does not match your skin tone. We all know when we buy foundations thinking it's our colour but only when you rub it in quite well does it appear blended. Well this is no different. My advice, purshase a tinted moisturizer for a quarter of the price, because that's all this really is.

It, and propylene glycol, are the only two glycols that can be consumed by people without killing them. PEG is used, among other things, as a laxative. The 400 refers to its molecular weight--PEG 400 is a fairly thin product.

There are many uses for PEG in cosmetics. It's a preservative, it absorbs moisture, it's kinda slippery but at the same time sticks to skin and other makeup sticks to it so it makes the product feel better when you apply it, but one of the biggest reasons to use it is it's what's called a "mutual solvent." There are many chemicals that won't dissolve in water, but will dissolve in PEG. Water also dissolves in PEG, so if you put water, a chemical that won't dissolve in water (like many oils) and PEG together, the water and oil will both dissolve in the PEG and you'll get what you want.
