How can you tell if an M1 carbine stock is a prototype?

They are REALLY rare, but if it has a large 1,2,3,4, or 5 on the stock it is for sure a prototype. If it has a number over 6 with just numbers and no letters, it may be. Look at some pictures of M1 carbine stocks, and see if it looks any different. If it has any weird stamps on the wood, re-ask the question with a description of the stamp.

How are 'self-sealing gas tanks' made and how do they 'self-seal' when punctured by a bullet?

Not sure of the manufacturing process but the self-sealing fuel tank was a normal fuel tank on the outside. On the inside was a layer of rubber or plastic-type product that melted due to the kinetic energy of a bullet piercing it. The melted rubber would fill the hole created by the bullet.

To add slightly to the above, the fuel tanks were covered on the OUTSIDE with a layer of raw, non-vulcanised rubber. When a bullet passed through, the rubber closed behind it slightly, and a little fuel often leaked out, causing a reaction with the rubber, making it swell and plug the hole.

What year was the Model 39A shotgun produced by J Stevens at the Chicopee Falls plant?

OK. The Stevens Model 39A was produced between 1939 - 1947. It was manufactured in 410 guage, with a 5 shot tubular magazine. The 39A is a bolt action shotgun with a 24" barrel and full choke. The barrel is blued and the shotgun has a plain walnut one piece pistol grip stock and forearm. Approximate weight of the gun is 5 1/2 pounds. This is all the information I could come up with. I hope it helps. Elwoodjarman@aol.com

Answerit is not necessarily "unique" but I've never seen one like mine before. it is a tube magazine .22 autoloader. that is with .22 lr. with the obsolite .22 long and .22 shorts it is a repeater kind of like a bolt action.it can be operated like a bolt action with all three varieties of ammo if one pushed in the bolt handle.

it definitely says model 87 on the bbl. there are other letter and number combinations after that with patent nos on the receiver.
