It is because the warm water has low amount of dissolved oxygen and organism can survive without oxygen.

How can oil kill marine life?

because the chemicals in the oil get into the coral causing it to die

What is life like on a deep sea oil rig?

It is different. A offshore rig worker works on a rotational schedule. Generally, work is a straight 14 day hitch. In many foreign countries, a common hitch is 28 days. This would be called a 28/28, as you get 28 days of work and 28 days off work. The company pays for your transportation from your home base to the rig site.

There are no holidays. Hours are long. Accomodations are cramped.

For every job on a rig, there has to be two people, typically a day shift person and a night shift person. Bringing alcohol aboard a rig is prohibited. There may be special smoking rooms. All rigs have workout rooms.

Life means missing special occasions with friends and family. The internet and the many forms of communication helps greatly in this manner.

Work hours may exceed 12 hours, but you don't have to worry about meals, laundry or a commuting to work, so it doesn't seem that hard.

I've included a link on offshore life.

What is a Corpsman in the Marines?

Corporal is the first rank considered NCO or non commisioned officer. What they do in the Corps depends on what military occupational specialty they hold. Typically the corporal will be supervising those beneath him, or enforcing orders issued by those above him.

What weapons did the marines use in WW2?

This list represents the weapons used by all the forces in World War 2.

The Marines used the Browning BAR, the M1 Garand or Carbine depending on whether they fought in the Pacific or Europe. Officers carried Colt 45 pistols (but trust me they used the rifles too in the Pacific) They used the flame throwers and the large artillery. They used automatic machine guns and this saved many Marines. They also had bayonets and the Bowie Knife.

What are the effects of sewage to marine life?

Pollution in the sea comes in many forms: litter and rubbish; oil spills; chemical runoff, etc. There are huge ramifications for marine animals.

  • One of the major problems is that animals such as turtles and sea birds mistake floating plastic for jellyfish. They try to eat them, and these items suffocate the animals. The UN Environment Programme estimates that about one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals every year are killed by plastic debris, which can include not just plastic bags, but syringes, cigarette lighters and toothbrushes, all of which have been found inside the stomachs of dead seabirds.
  • Another significant problem is that birds and marine animals are often entangled in discarded nets and fishing lines. Naturally, the more they struggle, the tighter they become entangled, until they die a slow and painful death.
  • Some of the rubbish contains toxins that can get into animals' food chain, slowly poisoning them, or even causing sterility so the species cannot reproduce. The same effect can be caused by pollutants and chemical runoff from land. These poisons can also kill off plant life upon which some species rely. As the plant life dies off, so must the animals which are reliant upon that food source.
  • The ocean absorbs a huge amount of our CO2 from the air and atmosphere. Due to the absorption of this high amount of CO2, the oceans have started to become acidic. Shells and other invertebrates' shells are starting to dissolve from the acidity. Without their shells, they die, and it is forseeable that, in the future, coral will cease to exist. With this extinction and death it will effect the entire food chain all the way up to us humans.
  • All these pollutants disrupt the respiration, blood chemistry, skin and salt gland functions of many animals' bodies. Pollution is believed to be the cause of a recent herpes-like disease that is killing many sea turtles - fibropapillomas. The exact cause is unknown, but pollution is believed to be responsible for sudden, unexplained diseases that are decimating certain animal populations.

How do oil spills in the ocean cleans up?

Recovery of oil is possible at the surface of the water by using skimmers. It is a slow process, and skimming has not been able to keep up with the volumes being spilled. Wave action can make skimming difficult. Oil can be removed through controlled burns if there is sufficient oil to burn (near the location where oil is leaving the well). Dispersants do not remove oil, but help the oil breakdown.

Once an oil spill has reached land, the efforts to remove oil becomes more difficult. They have been able to net out some of the oil in the marshes, but a lot of effort is going into removing turtles that have come in contact with the oil. Oil as it washes up on beaches may be scooped up and placed in plastic trash bags. It should not be touched. BP and the government are working on special protective berms, which should be able to filter some of the oil out, to help protect the marine life in marsh areas.

What are the basic principles of marine pollution and prevention?

There are many ways to minimize marine pollution. Recycling, participating in a beach clean up, cleaning up and minimizing personal garbage are ways to help.

What are the pros and cons of becoming a Marine officer?

Well first off there is no Marine ROTC there is only Navy ROTC with Marine Option the pros are that you are part of "the few, the proud" and you are serving your country and being paid to go to college. The con is that you will be working your head off for all four years of the program and all the years of Obligated Service.

What are dispersants and do they work to clean up a spill?

Oil molecules naturally cling together. The binding forces are called the molecular cohesive forces. The dispersant mixes with water, helping to break apart the oil on the surface of the water.

It does not really remove the oil from the water. It attempts to reduce the harmful effects of the spill and assist in the natural dispersion or mixing of oil and water.

As shown in one of the links, there are toxic effects of dispersants on coral rocks which have marine biologists very concerned.

See related link. Also, BP has a fact sheet under Joint Information Center webpage on the chemical composition of the dispersants.

How does algae affect a marine life?

upwelling affects the marine life because of the steagmagmaticbuoyant force of the air that goes through the water evaporates and crash out marine lives

How are birds cleaned in an oil spill?

The dish detergent, "Dawn" cleans them right up!

Answer:

Cleaning oiled birds is a feel-good thing that the public demands. In reality oiled birds have usually ingested enough oil to impact their health and are no longer viable. In addition the recovery process of feeding the birds and accustoming them to human contact adversely affects their ability to survive in the wild. Many experts advocate simply euthanizing oiled birds.

Is it hard to be a Marine?

No, but some of the languages can be difficult to learn. It is a major help if you are multi lingual as a child. And an "A" in High School French or Spanish won't make you a French Linguist or Spanish Linguist with a European posting.

How is the wildlife in that area affected by the spilled oil?

The oil covers the animals and it will be hard for them to breathe because of the smell, the birds when covered by oil cannot fly easily and so might be eaten.

The oil also destroys the habitat of the animals

What are the different types of water pollutants and their effects?

1.)Human wastes such as feces and urine

2.)Industrial wastes such as oil.

3.)Chemical runoff such as fertilizer.

4.)Detergents

How long will it take to clean up an oil spill?

For the current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, they hope that with relief well drilling, they will kill the well within 3 months. It will be very hard to determine how long remedial actions will go on for at this point. As of today, May 2, 2010, they are taking actions of how to lessen the impact, ( dispersants, controlled burning, skimmer, floating booms) but the effectiveness remains to be evaluated.

How does marine pollution affect us?

Community Answer 1

For centuries the oceans have been treated like sewage dumps. Polluting the oceans is a horrible act and the result can be devastating to all living things. Many people don't think about that when they go and pollute the beaches. Now it's time that all people take a stand and help clean up this tragic mess we have made over millions of years.

Two- thirds of marine life is endangered now. There are three main reasons why they are all endangered. One reason is that with all the trash and chemicals in the ocean water it becomes difficult for the marine life to breathe. That will kill them really quick. Next, is that many animals like turtles, choke on garbage because they think its food. The last main reason is when toxic waste harms one organism; it will end up harming a whole food chain of marine life.

Community Answer 2

There is a long list of pollutants in the ocean including garbage, toxic waste, vehicle and boating pollution, waste water, oils, farming, and agriculture. The top two major pollutants are toxic waste and chemicals. There are ways to stop some of these polluting habits but they won't completely stop it for good. Think of how you can help in your own little way.

Community Answer 3

It affects it because the animals will die because of all the pollution also because of what we humans like litter or oil gets thrown into the ocean and kills the fish and other animals in the ocean.

When people dump waste or spray chemical sprays anywhere, when there is rain, they get washed to the rivers then straight to the waterfalls then go to the oceans polluting marine life that kills corals, aquatic mammals, fishes, sea birds (that eat fish), sea snakes, crustaceans, amphibians, and reptiles (that eats fish and other sea creatures)

Other animals that eat fish will become poisoned because if fish gets poisoned, it wont die it will just keep growing and will become a mutant and, when something eats the mutant, it will get poisoned too and, when a mother eats a mutant (or something else that ate the mutant) will be worse as if she will pass her poison to newborn babies drinking her milk.

Pollution is a bad thing that should be stopped. We are killing all marine life. So use environmentally safe sprays.

Community Answer 4

We need to do all we can to help stop pollution. its not only killing animals but its also killing us, humans.

Water Pollution gets into marine animals lungs and kills them. pollution is just like a poison to us. on contact it kills them. every year more and more are showing up floating on top of the water dead. we need to stop this.
