Samuel Clemens changed his name to Mark Twain because of his experiences of being on a riverboat.

"Mark twain" was what the leadsman on a riverboat called when the water was two fathoms deep -- that's 12 feet, which is deep enough to be considered safe for most boats of the era.

In addition to a phrase commonly heard on the Mississippi, "Mark Twain" was the original pen name of Captain Sellers, an old steamboat pilot who wrote rather all-knowingly about river conditions for the New Orleans Picayune in the mid-1800s. In one of his early newspaper articles, Samuel Clemens parodied the first Mark Twain's writing. Captain Sellers read the parody and was offended, which Clemens regretted. As a tribute to the old man and steamboat traditions, Clemens started using the pen name of Mark Twain in 1863.

Mark Twain became both Clemens' writing name and a persona he affected in his works. Particularly in his travel books "Innocents Abroad" and "Roughing It," "Mark Twain" narrates as an excitable, naive fellow, quite unlike the real Clemens. In later years, the public figure of Mark Twain became known as a genial humorist, disguising Clemens' serious side.

Most definitely, Mark Twain had pets. He once wrote "A home without a cat -- and a well fed, well petted, and properly revered cat -- may be a perfect home, perhaps, but how can it prove title?" And he and his wife and daughters had a series of cats at their home in Hartford. They also owned collie dogs, garden ducks, and at least one pony.

In addition to his lovely quote about cats, Twain had many positive things to say about dogs - including this one: "Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in."

Later in life, Twain supported efforts of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Anti-Vivisectionist League.

The phrase "Gilded Age" was coined by Mark Twain and means that while all looked good on the surface, what lay beneath was vile and corrupt. It ushered in a period of Robber Barons, greed, corrupt politics, banks giving credit to those who didn't deserve it and garrulous displays of conspicuous consumption. The end result of all of this was the stock market crash that heralded the start of the Great Depression.

that the weather varies so much in New England that the man could exhibit in a short amount of time. after collecting the weather he had more to spare, to give away, etc. so Twain is using hyperbole to give effect on how many kinds of weather New England has.

In general, he was criticizing Cooper's writing. However, he did think that Cooper presented Indians as more noble than they actually were. Twain frequently demonized Native Americans, calling them drunk or degraded, while Cooper romanticized them at times.
