The show was set during the Korean War (1950-53) and was about life in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (hence the acronym: M.A.S.H.). Korea was the first conflict in which the concept of front line medical/surgical care was introduced to the ugly business of war, and was an unparalleled success. The lead characters were surgeons and allied health care personnel. The Armed Forces had no previous experience with doctors on the front line, and the show reflected the difficulty of imposing army discipline on surgeons. In 1972, 19 years after the close of the Korean conflict, "MASH 4077" debuted, at the height of the Viet Nam conflict. The humor, as well as the seriousness of the subject matter reflected strong antiwar feelings that were widespread at that time.
