Medieval Pilgrimages

People would undertake a pilgrimage for many different reasons. They often desired to see and touch places and objects that were considered holy. Also, people visited holy sites as penance for having committed sin. Finally, people went on a pilgrimage just to travel.

The main Christian pilgrimages in medieval times were to the Holy Land (Jerusalem), Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Rome, and Canterbury in England. These pilgrimages were important for religious reasons, allowing believers to visit holy sites, seek spiritual renewal, and earn indulgences. It depended on when you contracted the disease, generally. If it was towards the beginning of the epidemic, then they might have hope, and try to treat it as they would any illness: your family would care for you.

However, if you caught the plague after the epidemic had swelled to a pandemic, and people were feeling hopeless, then often healthy citizens would board up the houses of the ill, and confine them therein. You and your family would die of lack of water, starvation, or the disease itself.

The Black Death was a pandemic (an epidemic spreading over a large area) that killed millions of people. It started in Europe in 1347, and lasted until 1351. Almost one out of every three people in Europe got the disease and died. This means about 25 million people died from it in Europe alone.

Medieval Europe was really dark and dangerous. There was little to no traveling, no trading, and people were living and dying within a ten mile radius of where they were born as well. There were many poor people and little education as well. It was a time of isolation. However, the Renaissance changed all this. People got enlightened and started seeing the greater things in the world, and big trading was set up, education became a huge deal, and traveling became much more common. The Renaissance really got Europe back on its feet and there's a whole world out there, go explore it and gain knowledge!

The clothing that was worn by medieval cooks included dresses made from wool and cotton along with aprons that covered the entire front of the clothing. They also wore hair coverings like bonnets and hats. Men often wore leggings with a tunic that was also covered by an apron.
