Have a 2000 Mercury cougar stick shift looking for the dipstick for the transmission do you know where it may be located thank you for your help.

the fuel reset switch is located in the truck of the car, drivers side (left side) behind the trunk side cover, you have to remove the carpeted cover to access the relay reset (theres a red button on top)

There are several kinds of compressors--reciprocating, screw, centrifugal. We'll use a reciprocating compressor in this example. It's got a piston moving back and forth in a cylinder to compress the air. (It's like a car engine, and you can get a kit to turn an old Volkswagen engine into a compressor.) This assembly is called a stage. The cheapest compressors are single-stage units--they have one piston and cylinder. The air from the atmosphere is sucked into the assembly, compressed then sent to the tank. Next come two-stage compressors, which have a low-pressure stage and a high-pressure stage. The air from the first stage is compressed again by the second stage, which gives more pressure with less stress on the unit. It's easier on the compressor to take air from 2 atmospheres to 4 than it is to go from 1 atmosphere to 4. A three-stage compressor takes this doubly compressed air and compresses it again, and a four-stage compressor has a fourth compression step. Most of the people who buy three-stage compressors fill diving tanks with them--you need to be able to make 5000 psi to fill a diving tank, and three-stage compressors are good for that.

Answering this question is difficult without a year and motor size provided. I have experience with many Cougars from 1987 on - and all but one were completely timed by the computer without a distributor.

The 3.8l engines 1994 and newer all had computer-controlled ignitions with coil packs and a crankshaft position sensor, so it is timed with software and is not modifiable.

The 1999 and newer engines were all computer-controlled.

Many V6 motors before 1994 were mechanically timed with a distributor, but I did own a 1993 with a computer-controlled setup. The distributor-based engines in those years are all timed according to the standard procedure.

The proper placement for a seat belt is across the lap and over the shoulder, ensuring it fits snugly and securely to provide maximum protection in case of a collision. Well, unless you are a mechanic or an advanced hobby mechanic, I would not attempt it. I have done it along with a partial overhaul. The water pump is located inside the timing chain cover. It requires complete removal of the entire intake system including intake manifolds, removal of the oil pan which includes removing the entire steering system and the front differential just to get to the timing chain cover. Then you get to remove the radiator, fan, power steering pump, and crankshaft pully so you can remove the cover. Once off, you can easily remove the water pump. The job basically requires a complete upper and lower tear down. If you are going to do it, I would strongly recomend doing an overhaul while you are at it (with the exception of messing with the heads and pistons, since that is the only thing left once you get in there). Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I wanted to share my pain before someone else got into it. I did complete the job and the car runs nearly new, but it is not a job for the weekend mechanic. I am not a professional, but I consider myself quite advanced and rebuild old motorcycles and cars as a hobby since I was 12, my uncle was a drag racer. Good Luck Scott

How do i find the instructions for changing out the fan switch assembly in a 2001 Mercury Cougar?

On the quad 4 engine the water pump is on the back of the engine. For your application the consensous is that you must pull the timing cover off and insure that the twin cams remain in the same position. Then you remove the exhaust manifold in order to remove the water pump. I got an estimate and the mechanic said he wouldn't touch it for less than $600.

First thing that you will need to do is remove the raidiator, making sure to remove the lower water hose from the radiator and all other hoses connected to the radiator.

Next you will need to unbolt your power steering pump and the front mounting bracket and remove all fan belts.

Unbolt the alternator bracket from the engine block and front of the water pump.

Unbolt the fan belt pulley from behind your fan. The best way I have discovered to do this is by placing a screwdriver between one of the bolts and use it as a lever.

You will find 4 10mm sized bolts through the pulley to the water pump.

Once you have unbolted the pulley, you are ready to unbolt the water pump.

You should be able to find the 4 water pump bolts and unbolt the water pump now.

The hard part is to now remove the fan off the old water pump and bolt it onto the new water pump. This is where I'd usually take it to the mechanic and get HIM to remove the fan from the water pump.

Now it is as easy as reversing the previous steps and put it all back together.

To disable a factory installed alarm on a 1999 Mercury Cougar, place the key in the ignition. Turn the key only halfway and let it sit in that position for 10 minutes before starting the vehicle.

simply pop it back into the bracket that it popped out of. They are "break-aways" meant to pop out instead of breaking. It may take some pressure, but if it is not broken in any way, just force it back in. It will pop in abruptly.

Take off your belt. Take off the fan. take off water hoses on pump. Unscrew all bolts on water pump. There are many. Put new pump in the same spot . Put silicone sealer on all of the connecting metal of the new pump. Place the new pump on and bolt it back up again. Wait a while for the silicone to set and dry.

I have a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis and my mother has a 2003 and they both are the same, so yours probably is also. After you pull the trunk lining away so that you can see the metal, there are 3 large black plastic wing nuts that you unscrew. Once you remove those, the tail light section will come out from the front and then you can get to the bulbs to replace them.

Turn it counter clockwise. You may need an oil wrench to loosen it. The new one goes on hand tight turning in clockwise. Make sure that the rubber seal from the old filter came off. Pre-lube the new rubber ring with oil before installing.

This takes moderate skill and you will want to replace your timing belt and your tensioner at the same time. The reason to replace both of these is that they are prone to failure and you will have them off anyway.

Remove coolant from bottom of radiator petcock. remove shroud and radiator.

remove fan clutch and fan. remove acessory belts. remove timing cover and thermo housing.

you will now see the timing belt going over the idler, cams, water pump and crank pully.

put the #1 piston at top dead center and your two cam pulleys and crank pulley should be at the marks corresponding to the block. mark them loudly anyways so you can see them better. try real hard not to move these three.

loosen tensioner and remove belt. unbolt water pump, cleanup face and install new one.

reverse order assembly. make absolutely sure your cams and crank are in the correct relationship when the belt goes on. It is a good idea to replace the front seal too since you are into it this far.

I left out some minor details but you'll figure it out or you shouldn't be doing this.

To reset the light,hold the SELECT and UNITS buttons for 5 seconds.The service interval light will be illuminated and then extinguish after approximately 4 seconds.

you best bet from what i hear is to change in throught the passenger wheel well. im about to imbark on this mission my-self too. it seems to me tht you have to take off the pulley's and the alternator and the rest of the pully driven stuff on the front of the engine ( its in sideways so the front of the engine is really the passenger-side). then there is the cover on the front of the engine, looks about 10 bolts, doesnt really seem all tht much trouble. but great cars are theese saturns.

Possibly. I have a 1995 Cougar with the 4.8L V8 and have used various parts from a 96 Thunderbird. My understanding is that, at least from 94 to 97 the 4.8l v8 engines are the same for the cougar, t-bird, mustang, Lincoln mark VII...

Follow the cable from the solonlid to the starter and simply take the bolts out and remove it. once you find the starter there will be 3 bolts one on the passenger side 15mm one on the driver side 13 mm and on the driver side there will be a 13 mm nut holding on a ground wire remove the nut and then remove the 13mm stud disconnect the 2 wires connected to the solenoid 1 spade connector and 1 10 mm i think pull the starter to the left and slide it over the front crossmember.

The water pump runs on the timing belt. You have to take the timing cover off, remove the belt and then remove the water pump. If you reuse the timing belt, mark the belt with a spot of paint at the camshaft and crankshaft so that you can replace it and have the engine in time. If you need to replace the belt, make sure the engine is at top dead center on the timing mark before you remove the belt.

You will need to remove the rear tire and wheel. Remove the axle end cap. Remove the wheel bearing nut. Remove the wheel bearing and the wheel seal. Reverse the process to install the new wheel bearing.
