It's possible that your fuel pump is getting ready to quit. It's working hard to push fuel to the engine and the circuit is overheating. Might be doing the same thing with a partially plugged fuel filter. Have both checked.
It means your engine coolant (i.e. antifreeze) is low.
Well if they dont work at all i would look undernear your dash near the pedals and check your fuses cuz most the time its just a blown fuze but it might be something else i dont know
Yes this happened to me on my 1999 Cougar.
On the roof above the rear view mirror is your intior light. Pop it out and disconect (from the plugs) Behind it you can see the motor that controls the sunroof. You will see a circular looking end that has a small Allen key in it's center. Match the Allen key and screww counterclockwise. This may take some effort as it is very hard to turn and the space is very limited (About 1/8 of a turn each time). This will slowly bring the sunroof back down. Its a real pain. I did mine in a snow storm in the dark at -10, LOL
Consider:
Check for, vacuum leak or loose hose at throttle body or MAF sensor. Favuum leaks are common and may present a hissing noise. If you can spray carb cleaner near intake gasket, on vacuum hose, or intake hose someplace where it changes the sound of the engine you have found your leak.
Check for an exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks have a very distinctive sound.
Check for a misfire. Your car shakes.
Check for faulty or damaged MAF sensor:
-Runs better with MAF sensor unplugged or:
-Banging MAF sensor with your fist whilke engine idling makes a change in sound of engine or:
-Remove MAF sensor and look at the wire. If it isn't clean and shiny silver color, it is contaminated. Clean or replace as needed.
Bad oxygen sensor upstream (before cat) bank one. Bank one is the side with cylinder #1.
Water or extreme temperatures affecting sensor operation. Remove water or wait for weather to improve or replace sensor.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Answer XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX The question referred to a code p1131 which is upsteam oxygen sensor lean. I personally would change the PCV Valve with one from NAPA. A stuck open PCV Valve can draw in unmetered air and set the code.jd1909
can anyone tell me where to find the OBD2 plug in on a 1999 cougar?
Low washer fluid
Check out autozone.com's repair guides online, under suspension, they have a good guide for doing it.
The 2.5 litre V6 engine in a 1999 Mercury Cougar has ( 1 timing CHAIN to each
cylinder head , so there are 2 timing CHAINS )
Remove Door Panel.
Peel Back Water Barrier.
Unscrew latch.
Remove two bolts holding the handle inner to the handle bezel(outer).
Remove the Anti-Theft shield with force.
Remove handle.
Reverse Process
Sounds like a severely cracked head to me. Did you overheat the engine???? Is your coolant level in the radiator going down?
I had the same problem with my 94 Cougar 4.6L. I had to replace the ECU. Hard to track down, good luck!!
Blown fuse, defective blower motor resistor pack, defective blower motor, or loose or disconnected wiring.
soudns like it is not getting enough fuel, try replacing the fuel filter, if that does not work check the fuel pump
there is a possibility that it may be a vaccum leak aswell. check all you lines.
it's on air box , where the air filter. you have to turn couterclockwise to remove it.
To replace the hinge on a 95 Mercury Cougar, remove the bolts holding the hinge in place. Find a replacement hinge from the manufacturer and install it using the right hardware.
There is an electrical failure in the trans and will have to be checked out by a good trans shop. GoodluckJoe
There is an inertia switch / fuel cutoff switch in behind the trunk liner , on the
left side of the trunk ( there is an access hole )
On the front outside corners of the seat you want to "pop" STRAIGHT UP, then slide it forward. It's just a couple plastic clips holding the corners down. I've pulled mine out a couple times for various things, easy as pie.
The seat needs to be pushed back (towards the trunk) before you can slide it forward.
I have one in a 95 cougar. TC is in need of replacement. The answer is that it is all relative! Relative to your bankroll, relative to the other mechanical aspects of the tranny, A Good TC will probably cost you at least $200.00 to $300.00, and the shop cost to disassemble it from the tranny will be at least another 200 to 300. Your gonna have maybe $600.00 into it. Why not consider having a complete rebuild for about 1,000 to 1,200, which could include a T.C. that you buy yourself. The old concept is that your already invested in the disassembly, why not go it all! Think about valve bodies, various gears, seals, etc etc. 100K is a good benchmark! TOPQuark
The reservoir on my 2000 Cougar is behind the front passenger strut tower, it should be the same on your 2001, they are the same car under the hood.
If you take the steering column covers(right before the dashboard)off it will be on the left side right under the signal light switch. It gets plugged in towards the driver( the connector is facing the engine.
Best,
Dave
***remove and clean your MAF sensor. $0.00 problem fixed
