On your 1997 Mercury Mountaineer :

Open the rear doors from the outside and on the end of the doors near the

latch you will see a small lever that is used to select child locks on or off

The transmission fluid can only be checked with a special tool from Mercury (there may be aftermarket tools). A plug on the underside of the transmission must be pulled and the tool inserted. The short answer for regular driver maintenance is, "No."

Bank 2 is the drivers side of the engine in your Mercury Mountaineer

Sensor 1 is between the engine and the catalytic converter ( upstream )

Sensor 2 is after the catalytic converter ( downstream )

It's near the front of the engine compartment and has ( 2 ) rubber hoses connecting

it to the engine ( at the top and the bottom of the radiator on opposite ends )

get some tools and turn some wrenches it is very easy to replace it. you can easily access it on top left of engine.

My front wheel bearings just went in my 04 mountaineer, and we tried to replace them ourselves, but in order to get to the bearings you have to have the truck up on a lift, so unfortunately we had to send it to a mechanic.

You need to adjust the parking brake shoes by taking the rubber plug off the back and adjusting them like regular brake shoes.

On my 1997 Mercury Mountaineer I adjusted the brake shoes, but it didn't work. The parking brake wouldn't hold, so I replaced the drums, and shoes and it still didn't hold. Next I replaced all the brake cables, since there didn't seem to be a cable adjustment. The problem ended up being the parking brake assembly. The coil spring inside somehow came loose and uncoiled about one revolution. This spring "Is the parking brake cable adjustment", it provides pre-tension to the brake cable, so when you push on the parking brake pedal it starts applying the parking brake after about 2-3 clicks. I when to "Pick a Part" junkyard and bought one for about $13.00 and that fixed the problem.

FYI: Just because you feel tension and hear clicking when pushing the parking brake down and the pedal comes back up when released, does not mean the pedal assembly is working. Check the cable tension when release and check the end of the coil spring to see if it is hooked over a metal tab (my broken unit, spring was up against the end of the brake cable and wasn't providing pre-tension)

If you replace the rear brake shoes and the parking brake doesn't hold, don't just also replace all the brake cables like I did, because it still didn't work.

If you can push the brake pedal all-the-way to the floor and it still won't hold, do the following:

- Release the parking brake and look under the car on the drivers side and inspect the parking brake cable and cable tension.

- The cable should not be loose when released, and the cable should be centered in the holes in the frame.

- If the cable is loose when released, the problem is the "Brake Pedal Assembly" under the dash on left side.

( 2 ) There is a fuse panel in the end of the dash on the drivers side ( the plastic

fuse panel cover is visible with the drivers door open ) and the Power Distribution Box

in the engine compartment on the 1997 to 2001 Mercury Mountaineer

1) Disconnect NEGATIVE battery terminal

2) Remove drive belt

- use a 3/8" drive breaker bar inserted in the square hole in the tensioner arm to rotate the arm to remove the belt (Take note as to the belt routing prior to belt removal)

3) Disconnect electrical connections from the alternator

- 1 plug on the top left side and 1 nut for the B+ on the top center

4) Remove the nut from the stud bolt (that is the rear one) and detach the coolant hose bracket

5) Remove the 3 alternator mounting bolts

6) Remove alternator

Installation is the reverse of removal. The process is fairly straight forward, and luckily everything is up top and readily accessible.

According to the 2001 Mercury Mountaineer Owner Guide :

With engine oil filter change :

For the 4.0 liter SOHC , V6 engine ( 5.0 U.S. quarts of 5W-30 engine oil )

For the 5.0 liter V8 engine ( 5.0 U.S. quarts of 5W-20 engine oil )

Open the panel in the rear (driver's side) that houses the jack. There is a 4'' x 4'' computer looking box. The sticker on the front will have your 5 digit code in bold writing. It is near the end of the opening so you may need to pull the plastic a bit, and use a flash light!

My Ford dealer was able to find the code for my 2000 Expedition by using my VIN number. It seems that the same would apply to your situation.

According to the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer Owner Guide :

Both the 4.0 liter V6 engine and the 4.6 liter V8 engine have the Electronic

Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS )

So , on the 4.0 liter V6 ( 1 coil pack with 6 towers ) and on the

4.6 liter V8 ( 2 coil packs with 4 towers on each )

It is located in the back of the car on the passengerside under neath the plastic. whhen you remove the plastic there will be a sticker there with numbers it is the one with 5 diigits.

If you are just topping up , a 50 /50 mixture of antifreeze and preferably distilled

water ( Ford states to not exceed 60 % antifreeze ) can be added to the reservoir to

bring the level up to the cold mark with the engine cold

It depends on the model radio you have, you can Google 1999 owners manuals for your truck and download a free pdf. But 97-2000 had numerous probs w/ radio.

For most models you hold down the clock button or RDS button for a couple seconds then use the seek button till you get to hours the push the button again till you get to minutes.

# 24 is a 15 amp fuse for the cigarette lighter , OBD II , in the passenger compartment fuse panel of a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

I have a 2003 it might be in the same place? MIne was located behind the right rear panel the the truck space. First you pull off the RR seat belt panel then pull back the lower panel. You will see a green plug and the computer module is right below it. There should the a sticker with your five digit code. It all snaps back in place. My local Mercury dealer wanted $42.50 for this info. Good luck.
