GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. It is a programming technique that allows the user to visually interpret commanding the program driving the GUI. All versions of Windows are GUIs. Computer games are GUIs. This is opposed to text based user interfaces. DOS (Disk Operating System) was the first operating system for the AT style desktop computer.   Defragging the HARD DISK on the other hand involves consolidating fragments. When data is saved to a hard disk, it will saved scattered sometimes. This would take a lot longer to read with all the jumping around. When you defrag the HARD DRIVE, those fragments are brought together to decrease read time. Hence the term, "defragment". So basically, you can have all the spaces you want between the data and still have a minuscule percentage of fragmentation. Fragmentation is caused from writing, not deleting.

  What the original contributor described above is file consolidation or a "space" defrag which is not standard and is usually found as a supplemental option with third-party defrag applications such as O & O. It too can have benefits, but it is not what defragging means and certainly not the REGISTRY as you were inquiring about.

My monitor flickered, informed me to check connection, and then went black. If you unplug the monitor from the computer and it goes black then it's not the computer or malware....it's the monitor going out. I bought a new monitor and everything is working fine again.

That depends on how many drives or virtual drives you have on your computer. Mainly the C: drive has Windows on it, if you only have a C: drive all your information and programs go here, but if you have multiple drives C: drive should be mainly for your Windows operating system.

I would never advise using ME, use Win98se if you have to, its more or less ME but faster but then its not very stable. Use Win2k or XP is my advice.

Why would you want to. Windows ME is the worst OS Microsoft ever came out with! If anything you need to up grade to 2000 or XP.

as of recently, it is impossible to downgrade to windows me, your only options right now are xp (support ending soon), vista (don't do it), 7, and soon to be 8. Those are the only options for windows right now.

I'm not sure what you mean. But if you mean that you want to format a hard drive or partion which is not a system file disk/partion. Then it's really easy to do. Start My Computer, right click on the hard drive/partion which you want to format and choose format, then choose file system which you prefer to format, and press ok/start.

Even in the early days when Linux first came out, it was often commented upon how much faster it was than traditional Unix systems. For many tasks, Linux simply performs better. There are some situations that Linux still has not been optimized for, though, so Unix systems are used to do the "heavy" lifting.
