Mohandas Gandhi

That scene, from Richard Attenborough's biopic film of Mahatma Gandhi, is semi-fictional. While Gandhi did encourage fellow Indians and Asians to burn their registration papers, he was never beaten by the police for that action as depicted in the film.

Artistically, however, Attenborough takes license with Gandhi's life at that point to depict the depth of Gandhi's commitment to his principles of non-violent resistance. The director has Gandhi continue burning the passes, demonstrating that he considered himself equal to his oppressors even while they continued their oppressive actions.

He had rather dim views on how Britain ruled India, as he led hundreds of thousands of Indians on the famous "Salt March" to protest certain British policies. His non violent, pacifist form of civil disobedience helped expedite India winning her rightful independence from the British Empire in 1947.

His parents were Karamchand and Putlibai Gandhi. He was married to his wife, Kasturba, when both were 13 years of age. Kasturba died February 22, 1944, at the age of seventy-four, while in detention at the Aga Khan Palace in pune. Gandhi had four sons: Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas, and Devdas.Gandhi had three siblings. Two brothers, Laxmidas and Karsandas, and one sister, Raliatbehn.

Gandhi would go on many fasts, so often he did not eat. He would fast on either hunger strike or self-purification. When he did eat, though, he would eat rice and vegetables.

Charles Manson and his family, plus the use of Cocaine brought down the hippie movement. It hung in for awhile longer because of Woodstock, but the movement was never the same after Manson and his family committed the Tate murders. The hippies couldn't believe that someone just like them, one of their own if you will, with long hair and a love for music and peace could do such a thing. They figured if a hippie could do that, then maybe they should rethink things. They became very paranoid and for the first time the hippies (along with most of America) locked their doors at night. Before that, you could go to anybody's house and literally walk in and sit down and smoke a joint, hit acid, and be friends with a total stranger. That's just the way it was at the Canyon (Laurel Canyon) where the hippie movement truly began. Manson brought a chilling reality that evil can be in your neighborhood, regardless of your goals for a peaceful world.

Cocaine use helped deaden the hippie movement as well. People began building walls (Both psychologically and literally) around themselves and their homes, and began using, which destroyed many lives...and is still doing that to this day.

His dad was like a judge or diwan as they used to call it. His mum taught Gandhi all about the religion of Hinduism and she used to take him to the Hindu temple.

Harilal Gandhi (1888-1948) rebelled most strongly. He renounced all family ties in 1911 and embarked upon a tragic, lifelong path of self-destruction. He became a Muslim convert, an alcoholic, an embezzler; accounts of his arrests, public drunkenness, and destitution became commonplace. "I was a slave of my passions when Harilal was conceived," said Mohandas. Harilal appeared at his father's funeral in such derelict condition that few recognized him. He died in a tuberculosis sanitarium two months later.

Manilal Gandhi (1892-1956) was in disgrace in 1916 after he lent his elder brother some money. Mohandas sent him to South Africa, where he edited an Indian newspaper. Later he spent a brief period in India, bitterly astonished at the Mahatma's genial, old-age mellowness.

Ramdas Gandhi (1898-1969) had no taste for asceticism, yet participated in the grueling civil protests of the 1930s. Numerous jailings wrecked his health. Born and raised in South Africa, he never adjusted to the idealistic poverty imposed by his father.

Mohandas acted as midwife at the delivery of his youngest son, Devadas Gandhi (1900-1957).

Alone of all the sons, Devadas stayed near his father, sometimes being granted the privilege of serving as his secretary.

In 1976 Gandhi's direct descendants numbered 47 in five nations. According to Ved Mehta, author of Mahatma Gandhi and His Apostles, they "do everything from selling life insurance to working in space engineering; one is a Moral Re-Armament evangelist." Deposed Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi is no relation.

Mohandas K. Gandhi belonged to The Congress Party, and was the President of the Indian National Congress Party in 1924.

Gandhi ji was a person who fought for Indian Independence with the greatest weapons, viz. Truth and nonviolence. The purpose was simple, get back the Independence from the Britishers, but not at the cost of enmity or war. In-spite of many atrocities he never left his principles.

The Dandi march took place on 12 march 1930 from the Sabarmati ashram to nearly 400 km Dandi (a village on the coast of Gujarat.

He never got the Nobel peace prize. He was nominated for it 5 times. He was due to get it in the year of his assassination, 1948. Due to his death, no one was awarded it that year.
