Morse Code

Although cellphones and SMS have pretty much made Morse Code moribund - its most popular current use is probably by amateur radio operators - this is a sub-category dedicated to the dots 'n dashes of the code that was invented by Samuel F.B. Morse in 1838. Find out "What is the most famous distress signal in Morse Code?" or "How do you communicate using Morse Code?

What does the distress signals CQD and SOS stand for in Morse code?

Why?

Morse code can be laborious to send and slow when using a hand pump style of key. Therefore various code systems were used by operators to shorten the time it took to send messages. In the early days of Morse code on ships there was a book published which has these codes in it. of those short version codes CQ, 73's 88's and a few other number codes are the only one remaining.

In the case of CQ it was simply a invitation for any wireless operator who could receive the call to answer. There were varients of this CQ followed by the callsign such as "CQ CQ CQ G4ZQM DE G0TMH " was a specific request for a station to reply ( In the example radio station G0TMH is calling G4ZQM the DE means 'from'). CQDX requests a long distance communication. (All of these codes are used by radio hams today using Morse).

CQD was the internationally recognised call requesting any station to respond to a distress call (One assumes the D of CQD stands for "distress").

Other codes and cyphers existed such as the number codes 73's and 88's which were used by radio operators to shorten messages for passengers on ships who regularly said the same thing such as "Best wishes" (73) and "Love and kisses" (88). Most of these number codes have been lost in time and there is no copies of the radio offices code books available. It is also likely that each shipping company had its own short version codes to encrypt traffic from other companies and ships listening in.

SOS

The letters of S O S in Morse code are the sounds ... --- ... (short short short, long long long, short short short);

These are the extremes of opposite in Morse code. Consider that 911 in USA is used on the key pad for a phone because it is at the extreme ends of the keypad and therefore unlikely to be pressed by accident. The same logic occurs in Morse.

Later on the letters S O S were attributed to the phrase Save Our Souls but in fact had nothing to do with the reason SOS was chosen.

What is military slang for Morse code?

Commonly referred to in the U.S. Navy as CW. Abbreviation/acronym for Continuous Wave, a method of radio transmission (telegraphy).

Who sells a stucco called rock dash or pebble dash or slap dash?

"Pebble dash" isn't a type of stucco material, it's a technique for applying the stucco. Immediately after regular stucco is applied to the wall, pebbles or small rocks are thrown against the wall surface so that they stick to the wet stucco finish. Successfully applying the finish requires some skill and practice. Pebble dash stucco was particularly popular in mission/bungalow buildings of the early 20th century.

What are bad things about Morse code?

I don't think there are any, but feel free to prove me wrong :P I would like to find out, too. :)

Is knowledge of Morse code a good sing of high intelligence?

Not necessarily. But it does indicate 1) someone has has the "talent" to recognize sounds and associate it with letters or words 2) someone who was determined enough to learn Morse Code.

You would REALLY have to be interested in Morse Code to go through the time and effort to learn it well, and you do need to use it from time to time to keep from forgetting it. Using it will keep your skills up.

I am still working with learning Morse Code fully, and operate regularly on Ham Radio with it (2008). There are a lot of Ham Radio operators that very much enjoy the mode and find a lot of satisfaction just using Morse Code, I am one of them. Partly for the "magic" of it, mostly for the fact the "better operators" are the ones using Morse Code.

CW and Morse Code are not the same. Morse Code is the series of dots and dashes that make up the letters and numbers, etc... CW is the method by which Morse Code is sent! CW stands for Continuous Wave... When I press down on my CW key, my radio (Icom 718) will transmit a continuous wave of 700 hertz audio tone. When I let up, it stops transmitting. The sequence and timing of pressing down and letting up creates the dots and dashes, which are Morse Code!

In Ham Radio, CW is loosely used to mean Morse Code, and vice versa.

More information about sending and receiving Morse Code can be found via Google.

But the short to your answer is, no... Being able to send and receive Morse Code by ear does not indicate a high level of intelligence, but rather a high level of dedication!

Hope that helps,

Andrew

What is the Morse code being used for today?

How do you laugh in Morse code?

Well that depends. If you wish to use the classic "ha" then it would be five dots and a dash ( * * * * * - ) If you wish to use the more modern "lol" then it would be dot dash dot dot dash dash dash dot dash dot dot ( * - * * - - - * - * * ) If you just wanted to kind of giggle with a "te he" then it would be dash dot dot dot dot dot ( - * * * * ) Or if you just want to spell the word laugh then it would be dot dash dot dot dot dash dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot dot dot ( * - * * * - * * - - - * * * * * )

Who used morse codes?

People in World War 1. They used it to keep plans away from enemy solders.

------------------

When Morse, Henry and Vail invented the telegraph in 1836 it produced a mechanically punched tape with "the Code" as a method of long distance communication with a recorded record. It was the primary communications system for the financial institutions and strategic communications such as railroad control.

Actually, Morse Code, and the similar International Code (sometimes also referred to as Morse Code) via wire transmission were in use long before the civil war and decades after World War II. And the reason it was called a code was not to conceal information, as one person (a potential enemy) with the proper equipment could hear it the same as an ally. Like the binary code of today its dots and dashes represented a shorthand of the English language solely for electronic communication.

Morse Code was invented long before voice radio came into existence in 1906. Even after voice radio was around, Morse or International Code was still transmitted over longer distances with simpler and cheaper equipment, and also more easily heard through static interference than voice. There are few amateur radio operators (Hams) that do not have equipment to produce Morse signals and for those that are not trained to read it, there are auxiliary computer devices that can translate what is transmitted when received. It still takes a practiced hand to send it; and, a practiced mind to translate it, particularly if computer chips are disabled by an EMF pulse.

In order to keep plans away from an enemy, you would need to encrypt the message first, then transmit the encrypted version. The enemy and the friend could both take down the encryption, but the friend would have the key to decrypt it.

How do you say hunter in Morse code?

The word "hunter" translates to ".... ..- -. - . .-." in Morse.

As an example sentence, "- .... . / .... ..- -. - . .-. / -- .. ... ... . -.." means "the hunter missed".

What does Morse code look like?

Morse code looks like a series of dots and dashes, with spaces between them to know when a letter ends and the next one begins. But Morse code is usually heard not seen, as people sent Morse code to each other not written, but beeped by a machine.

For example, Morse code is composed of dots and dasheswould be (in international Morse code):

-- --- .-. ... . -.-. --- -.. . .. ... -.-. --- -- .--. --- ... . -.. --- --.-

-.. --- - ... .- -. -.. -.. .- ... .... . ...

What does Dico Tibi Verum Libertas Optima rerum Nunquam servili Sub nexu vivito fili mean translated to English?

William Wallace

What is Morse code by light called?

To use Morse code using light, you need a hand held torch which has the ability to switch on and off by use of a button preferably. In the Royal Navy and most other Navies a 5 inch hand light (close signalling), 10inch light (mid - horizon signalling) and 15 inch lights (horizon signalling) are used.

You must ensure that the light is pointed directly at the receiver at all times any stray movement can result in the receiver not seeing the letter or even message being sent.

Simple press and release the button on your light quickly or slowly to indicate a dot or a dash. Leave a long period between words, so as not to confuse the receiver, also wait until the receiver gives one long flash to indicate they received the word correctly.

If you make a mistake during a word you need to give 8 dots which indicates an error, you then resend your word.

Did lighthouses use Morse code?

yes. at a school holiday in suffolk 1947 we could see the flash from the southwold lighthouse, just one flash that we were told was the letter e

What are ten facts about the Morse code machine?

Morse Code provides a letter-based method of communication by means of any type of signal that can be switched on and off ... light, sound, etc. As such, it can accomodate messages in any language that uses the familiar Roman (English) alphabet. While using the simplest possible transmitting and receiving equipment, it is highly immune to noise, and can succeed over very noisy 'channels'.

What is a slash in Morse code?

Morse Code is sometimes written with a slash between letters to avoid getting the letters confused. A double slash means a space between words.
