Tamla Records, the first label in the Motown group, was formed in January 1959. Motown is still going, currently as part of the Universal Music Group, but it ceased to be an independent company in June 1988 when founder Berry Gordy Jr. sold the business to MCA for $61 million.

Michael Jackson was first signed to Motown Records as part of the Jackson Five in 1969. He was 11 years old at the time.
The company was founded and owned by Berry Gordy Jr. The day-to-day running was done by Gordy himself in the early days, but as Motown grew he delegated key tasks to a number of heads of departments; for instance, Barney Ales ran sales, Mickey Stevenson was in charge of A&R, Maxine Powell ran Artist Development, Suzanne De Passe later ran the film and TV department, and a lot of Gordy's brothers and sisters had various administrative roles in the company.
