Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (abbreviated MS, also known as disseminated sclerosis or encephalomyelitis disseminata) is an inflammatory disease that affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other. There is no known cure for MS. In this category you'll find information about MS symptoms, treatment and more.

What causes the pins and needles when exposed to heat?

I don't know myself. I am trying to figure out because all of a sudden, whenever i am exposed to heat, I receive pins and needles in my upper body. The pins and needles hurt more then the ones you get from having a body part "fall asleep." For example, for the past two days I have been trying to take my dog for a walk. Its summer right now. And because of the heat I cant manage 3 steps away from my house. Even while using painkillers. At this point I am very scared. I wish you best of luck if you are having this disadvantage as well.

Would multiple sclerosis considered a preexisting condition?

Yes. Depending on your prior coverage, it may or may not be excluded... see links.

I have multiple sclerosis and I am still a student and I have lack of concentration what to do?

Cognition complications are common with MS, with memory loss and lack of concentration being the two symptoms patients experience most often. The key to staying mentally sharp with MS is to stay mentally active. This involves neuropsychological rehabilitation techniques that focus on your cognition, such as playing memory games. These techniques are as simple as doing a crossword puzzle, reading a book, or solving math equations in your head. As a student, taking regular breaks when you are studying or doing homework is the best way to keep your concentration from faltering. Even without MS, it can be hard to stay focused on the task at hand, especially if you’re working on an especially boring assignment. In order to avoid distractions and to keep yourself mentally sharp, step away from your studies for a few minutes and play a puzzle game. Sudoku and crosswords are popular among patients, but there are websites and apps geared toward mental exercise too. Lumosity and BrainAge games are very popular, and you can access them online, through your phone, or on a handheld gaming system if you own one.

Is there a link between foraminal narrowing and multiple sclerosis?

No, foraminal narrowing and MS are not related, although they can produce the same symptoms.

Foraminal narrowing is a condition in which there is narrowing of the spinal column, causing compression of the vertebrae and the nerves which protrude from them. Symptoms can sometimes mimic MS, with numbness and tingling in the extremeties.

MS is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks nerve cells, leaving behind scars (or scleroses). These areas of "demyelination" transmit signals less efficiently than normal, causing many varied symptoms, depending on the location of the actual demyelination. Thus, "Multiple Sclerosis" means "many scars."

Why would someone with multiple sclerosis have induced neutropenia?

Induced neutropenia is is a condition characterized by abnormally low blood levels of infection-fighting neutrophils, a specific kind of white blood cell. MS patients could have induced neutropenia as a side effect of the medication that they take.

MS medications usually modify or reduce the immune system's function, and they do it in different ways, but all of them modify immune function. Mitoxantrone is an immunosuppressant which suppresses the damaging effects of the immune system's attack on nerve tissue. If the medications are used improperly, or if they work in ways not expected, they could suppress the function of neutrophils as well.

Can one identical twin be born with multiple sclerosis?

I assume the question is whether or not one identical twin can develop MS and not the other.

First, a point of clarification. You are not "born" with MS, to the best of our knowledge. MS develops over a number of years, presenting between the ages of 20 and 50.

More specifically, can you be genetically predisposed to MS? Epidemiological studies have confirmed that there is a genetic component to MS. The chance of developing MS in the general population is about 1 in 750. But persons with first-degree relatives who also have MS have their risk increased to anywhere between 1 in 100 and 1 in 40.

The risk is not all genetic, though. For example, if one identical twin develops MS, the other twin has a 1 in 4 chance of developing MS. If genetics were entirely the cause, the other twin should have a 100% chance. The fact that the chance is actually 25% shows that there are other factors involved in determining whether or not a person will develop MS, such as ethnicity, familial national origin, geography, sex, and some heretofore undiscovered infectious trigger.

Can you use Echinacea if you have MS?

No direct or indirect correlation between Echinacea use and MS has ever been identified. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, however, does have a stated position on the use of Echinacea by people with MS:

"...echinacea may stimulate the immune system. This is a theoretical risk for people with MS because their immune systems are already inappropriately stimulated. No study has been done to investigate this theoretical risk in people with MS."

I would say that you would probably be OK using Echinacea to stimulate the immune system while you have a cold, but use beyond that period isn't a good idea. More study is needed before anyone can make a more educated recommendation.

Does MS condition effect a lie detector answer?

Multiple Sclerosis should not impact the answers you give on a polygraph machine. Polygraph machines measure physical reactions to questions, reactions such as pulse, blood pressure, galvanic skin response, respiration, and sphincter muscle activity.

If you have a bowel control problem, tell the examiner before you begin, as this may impact the response gathered from the seat pad. Also tell the examiner any medications you're taking, as some might impact things like pulse or blood pressure.

Another answers.com contributor wrote:

That's all standard Polygraph BS! MS can and does effect the results of a Polygraph. Involuntary shaking, tremors of the arms and legs are common MS symptoms and since the person being Polygraphed is NOT to move during the test then the involuntary movements will cause the test to be determined inconclusive or deceptive.

By the way, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled Polygraphs are not accurate and cannot be used in Court unless both the prosecuting attorney and the defendants attorney agree to let the results of the test be admitted as evidence.

Also, a Polygraph test measures nothing but pulse, blood pressure, galvanic skin response, respiration, and sphincter muscle activity. However, many different things can and do effect the results such as recalling a bad experience related to the issue at hand. Blood pressure can be elevated this way.

So any body believing a Polygraph test is lie proof or that MS doesn't effect the results are just stupid imbeciles.

Let's dissect each of these points one at a time:

MS can and does effect the results of a Polygraph. Involuntary shaking, tremors of the arms and legs are common MS symptoms and since the person being Polygraphed is NOT to move during the test then the involuntary movements will cause the test to be determined inconclusive or deceptive.

Let's clarify a few points: 1. Involuntary shaking of the arms and legs is NOT a common symptom of MS. Actually, tremors are less common than other MS symptoms. Additionally, tremors and other involuntary muscle movement, if it did register at all on the polygraph (which it usually does not, as the only sensors that detect movement are the seat pad and the respiration monitor), can be taken into consideration. 2. Involuntary muscle movements alone will not cause the test to automatically be inconclusive, and certainly would not be cause to flag the test as deceptive. At worst, answers would be invalidated and the test would need to be re-done.

the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled Polygraphs are not accurate and cannot be used in Court unless both the prosecuting attorney and the defendants attorney agree to let the results of the test be admitted as evidence.

Off-topic. This question asked about how MS affects a polygraph, not about the admissibility of polygraph tests.

many different things can and do effect the results such as recalling a bad experience related to the issue at hand. Blood pressure can be elevated this way.

Again, off-topic. Anyone, not just MS patients, can have this experience during a polygraph test.

So any body believing a Polygraph test is lie proof or that MS doesn't effect the results are just stupid imbeciles.

Beside the fact that these are ridiculous, harsh generalizations and personal opinion, they are not true. We know that polygraph machine results are not entirely reliable, but they are useful as part of the body of evidence which is used in a variety of settings, the least of which is in law enforcement. For example, most government agencies use a polygraph as part of the body of evidence considered when determining whether or not a person will receive access to classified information. No court proceedings are required in such a case, so the admissibility in court is moot.
