The two concepts build upon each other. A single tasking (ST) operating system is necessarily a single user (SU) operating system, but a single user operating system may be a multi-tasking (MT) operating system. For example, MS-DOS is a SU, ST operating system (there was only one "user" and only one program could run at a time), Microsoft Windows 3.1 was a SU, MT operating system (only one user could be logged in at a time, but multiple tasks could run at once), and Windows XP is a multiple user (MU), MT system, as multiple users could be logged in at once, and multiple tasks could be run at once. There is no known example of a MU, ST operating system.

The process load and the number of running processes affects system performance by slowing the system down. To prevent this from happening close the programs that you are not currently using.

They need an OS as this is the main program that operates the computer. Without this installed, all you would be able to do is switch on a device and nothing would happen. A better way to explain it would be that an OS is the programming of the computers brain, without it the computer would not know what to do with information imputed to it. OS systems take away the need to type in command language into the computer, so it also makes computing more efficent.

Viruses and Worms can be difficult to remove from a computer. Software tools are required to remove viruses and repair the computer code that the virus has modified. These software tools are provided by the operating system manufacturers and security software companies. Make sure that you download the tools from a legitimate website.

There are a few ways to go about doing this. For beginners. Create a restore point in case of a problem with the update. Check the updates to ensure that you have the latest ones. Download the updates using Automatic Updates or from the Operating System manufacturers website. INSTALL the update. Restart if required, but you shouldn't need to.
