A consumer operating system would probably be quite useless in this day and age without a web browser. Ubuntu is a Linux operating system. It's name (in South African) means humanity towards others. It is free, and also open-source. It has a desktop unique to Mac and PC.

Another way of thinking of it is that the user uses the applications, the applications use the operating system and the operating system uses the hardware.
