It's first historic records date back to the Sumerians of Mesopotamia around 3,000 B.C. and from there was passed onto the Egyptians.

Opium is not made, rather it is drained from the seed pods of mature poppy plants (of the opium variety). Once a mature plant drops its flowers, the seed pod becomes ripe after 5-12 days. Upon ripening, the seed pods are slit open (about 1/16 inch deep) with a sharp blade, and a white latex (opium resin) drains from the cuts. After it dries, it turns to a brownish color, and is collected by the farmer. The dried latex is then either smoked as is, dissolved in warm water and filtered (then evaporated to make purified opium), or the opium is used to separate the different opiate alkaloids (like morphine, codeine, thebaine) for drug production.

It depends. Some are fully natural, some are semi natural and some are fully synthetic. You would need to have the specific drug you want to find out about and check with the manufacturer.

You WILL test positive for opiates if u consume to many poppie seeds and eat them on a regular basis. (i.e bagels, poppie seed bread, cookies, ect...) So, if ur taking regular drug screenings u should inform whomever it is about ur poppie seed intake, just to be on the safe side!!!!

No. The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)contains different alkaloids than the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Therefore, an extract of the California poppy would not exhibit the same effects as opium. Herbal shops sometimes sell California poppy resin as a mild sedative, but the effectiveness of this preperation is not proven.

Buy a bag of poppy seeds at the grocery store. the ones for cooking... they are papaver somniferum: opium poppy. they fertilize the seeds but in a bag of about 2.5 million, one or two usually get past fertilization. just gotta dump em out onto soil. good luck

Well, that's not a very "strait forward" question. They have gotten it from several different places, some more than others, in different time periods. Which time period are you interested in? For a while, they imported (then exported) a lot from the middle east (turkey, Afghanistan, & others), Australia (Tasmania), Russia, France, and many other places. Their main target for export for a long time was China, and Chinese people began growing it themselves as well (against their governments wishes!). There have been a LOT of places Britain has imported opium (as well as other goods) from. Oh, and I forgot India! It was once a British colony and a large opium supplier!

Nowadays, I believe that Britain gets most of its opium from French and Tasmanian Pharmaceutical growers for medication production. They also import the Morphine, Codeine, and Thebaine already separated from the opium latex's "cocktail", to ease medication production. That way the raw opium need not be refined, and it saves a lot of time! Most of the illegal opium and heroin comes from Afghanistan and the Orient.

Just remember that Morphine, Codeine, Thebaine, and many others ALL come from the opium latex (resin). Some people think opium is one drug, in and of itself. It is NOT. Opium is like a "cocktail" or mixture of several different drugs know as opiate alkaloids. More drugs can then be refined and created from the original alkaloids. Such as:

Morphine can be refined into diacetylmorphine (aka Heroin).

Thebaine can be refined into oxycodone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone, etc...

MANY other types of drugs too... That's just a few, but they all originate from (you guessed it!) OPIUM! ;)
