The 1st Americans to settle permanently in Oregon Country were missionaries. Among them were Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. The couple married in 1836 and set out for Oregon, where they planned to convert local Native Americans to Christianity.

Originally, five nations: Britain, France, Russia, Spain, and the United States, had shown interest in Oregon. In the early 1800's, France and Spain gave up their claims, while Russia fixed the southern border o Alaska at 54*40`. That left Britain and the United States to resolve their claims. Both nations were represented mostly by fur traders, who sold guns, tools, and liquor to the Nez Perce`, Walla Walla, Yakima, and other Indian tribes in the area. In the 1830's some Methodist ministers made their way into the Oregon country and set up a number of mission schools. Their letters east poke glowingly of the fertile soil and abundant rainfall. Soon hundreds of Americans were off on the Oregon Trail. The route led from Idepedence, Missouri, to Portland, Oregon, and was similar to the one followed by Lewis and Clark.

James Smith, he made the people work if they wanted to eat. All the people wanted to just wash gold and that's all, but Smith put them to work. Later on after 1612, Jamestown improved when colonists started growing tabacoo. They even had slaves come from Africa so they can help and service could move quicker.

The four major industries of Oregon are agriculture, forestry (and fisheries), tourism, and technology.

The trail from Nauvoo, Illinios to Salt Lake City, Utah was approximately 1300 miles. The Oregon Trail was around 2100 miles.

5. Guarded the wagons at night from possible Indian attacks

It was when people said they where going to give out 640 acres to each male but then the bill failed, but nobody knew so everybody came but there was nothing there.

this trail was highly used at the time and even had trading posts on the trail allowing for purchase of supplies. during this time people went on the trail to go west to escape there troubles in the east and looked to prosper in the west

Oregon became U.S. territory under the Oregon Treaty in 1846, and a territorial government was created by Congress in 1849. In 1857, voters passed a state constitution, which was submitted to Congress. Congress admitted Oregon to the union as the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.

They brought with them mostly Bacon, potatoes, rice, beans, and biscuits. They brought some crackers usually, and drank water. Along the way they had beef jerky, eggs, milk, and many other dairies that can be produced with just a supply of milk, flour, yeast, and water. When they ran out of biscuits, they fried bread, because they had no room for conventional ovens.

The United States and Great Britain shared the Oregon Country from October 20, 1818 until June 18, 1846, when the two countries signed the Oregon Treaty, giving Great Britain the part north of 49° north latitude and giving the United States the part south of 49° north latitude.

The Oregon Trail crossed the Cascade mountains.

It was important because the Americans that paid for the land with tax money needed to know what they bought with that money. Also having a border that went all the way to the Ocean meant national security. Lewis and Clark helped establish that the United States owned the land since Russia, Spain, Mexico, and England all claimed the area at one time.

They would usually travel about 10 to 15 miles a day. On rainy and/or muddy days, sometimes they only traveled a mile!

It took them about 7-10 days to travel what a car travels in an hour.

People that traveled the Oregon Trail died of drowning in river crossings, snake bites, diseases, Native American attacks, starvation and freezing in early snowstorms. People would also catch so much diseases and sicknesses because of dirty water and many other things. Also they could run out of food and die.
