What is the purpose of an introductory paragraph?

An introductory paragraph is used to hook your reader into the rest of the essay, or making them want to read the rest of the piece of writing. It is also used to describe what you may be writing about, and can occasionally be used to describe your position on a topic.

What is the writing process?

Prewriting includes anything you do before you actually begin to write. This includes coming up with basic ideas, researching information, and talking things over with friends and advisors. You can also start your outline during this stage of the writing process. Drafting is the stage where you begin to put your ideas into sentences and paragraphs. At this stage, don't worry about spelling and punctuation - just get those thoughts down on paper. Your first draft is more like a conversation with yourself, discussing what you know and how you are going to go about telling your story. Revising means thinking about your readers and changing your draft so that they will understand what you are trying to say. This is the stage where you decide whether you need more explanation or organization. Make sure that your writing is as clear and concise as you can make it, and define any terms that you need to. Be certain that you have said exactly what you mean to say, and that your logic is consistent and correct. In the final stage, check your grammar and spelling. Make certain that your manuscript is printed in the correct format, and that you have used an easy-to-read font. This is the stage where you can ask someone to read over your work and double-check for errors. One warning: don't start editing until you have finished all of the other stages. If you stop in the middle to worry about edits, you will get side-tracked and never finish the story at all. First brainstorm, then come up with a tentative outline for your points. Then write your first draft, trying your best to include all punctuation and use all other grammar rules. Then read over the draft (proofread) a couple of times, analyzing each phrase, making sure that quotation marks are included where (if) needed, and that each clause has a subject and a verb (of course, checking every other single grammar rule that could possibly apply). Once you see your errors, edit it on that draft, right next to the error on the page. Write a second draft, including all of your corrections, and proofread again and maybe one more time. Rinse, repeat, until you are confident that it is a good paper.

What is the purpose of a paragraph?

A paragraph is a unit of text; it is made of sentences that connect to one another. Likewise, paragraphs support/connect to one another and together make up a written work, whether it is an essay or a story or something else. Paragraphs help organize writing, combining similar ideas together and developing key ideas that the work aims to convey.

Organizing writing into paragraphs helps readers understand the work better- it is much easier to read text broken up into paragraphs rather than one long "block" of text, and paragraphs can also help with understanding how ideas are related.

What is Five boxes style of news writing?

The five boxes is an approach to news writing that abandons the old 5w's approach to presenting a news story. The 5w's dictates a journalist should tell his or her audience the "Who, What, When, Where, and Why" of each story in the first sentence (or sometimes two).

The five boxes dictates a more creative approach that is more readible and informative at the same time.

The first box is your narrative lead, usually one to two sentences.

The second box is a good quote and a tidbit of factual information about the story, a couple paragraphs presenting nuts and bolts to the story (excuse my spelling).

The third box is a sort of secondary lead, leading the reader into the fourth box.

The fourth box is more nuts and bolts, the final nuts and bolts of the story, sometimes several paragraphs.

The fifth box is the "kicker." It is designed to end the story with a "bang," leaving the reader thinking. This is often a really good quote or a fact that leaves the reader wondering. It can be anything so long as it wraps up the story nicely. In some cases, it can go back to the beginning, making the story a sort of loop.

The five boxes are just guidelines. It can be six boxes or four. The point is, you are breaking up the information and presenting the story in a more dynamic format, something that is more compelling than putting the entire bulk of factual information in the front of a story, which was done in old school newsrooms in case the entire story didn't come through on the wire (according to rumor) or in case they couldn't fit the entire story on the page. It was also thought, that readers of newspapers reading at a third-grade level, didn't care to go on past the nuts and bolts first sentence.

What is climactic order?

In writing, there are patterns of organization as to how a writer will "grab" the reader to lead her to the end of an idea.
