Patrick Henry's first job was as a storekeeper for his father’s store in Virginia. He found the work unfulfilling and did not enjoy it, feeling that it lacked the excitement and challenge he desired. This dissatisfaction with his initial career path ultimately led him to pursue law, where he became a prominent orator and a key figure in the American Revolution.

He is speaking to the inadequate structure of checks and balances within the constitution to effectively protect the secession of power. He was afraid the people would not possess the physical capabilities to remove a President determined to establish a Monarchy. He was especially worried about the Government controlling a standing army that could be used by a tyrant to control the populace.

Sarah Shelton Henry was, actually, insane. She was kept in a seventeenth century version of a straight jacket in the basement of the Henry's Scotchtown home. Now, this may seem harsh, but the alternative was worse: an asylum was the only other option, a place that, at the time, was cold, cruel, and unkept. There was no question that she would die there of starvation or disease. She had the 'best' medical care, which were, for the time bleedings and exorcisms. When she finally died in February of 1776, she was buried in an unmarked grave on the family plantation. Word is that she still haunts Scotchtown. Now, this leads some to speculate that Sarah was the inspiration to Patrick Henry's famous quote "Give me liberty, or give me death!" Truth to this is really unknown. It could be true, but chances are it's historical fiction. If you enjoy historical fiction, there's been a book written about Patrick Henry and his nutsy wife called 'Or Give Me Death' by Anne Rinaldi. It's actually a brilliant and thought provoking piece. The stamp act was the British governments first attempt at taxing the colonists directly Henry like many others did not agree with this tax he stood before the House of Burgesses and boldly argued against the stamp act. The house passes four of his revolutions in opposition to the stamp act. The tax was repealed by parliament the very next year.
