Penicillin

It belongs to the "Penicillins" antibiotic category. The Pen Vee (penicillin) is also a name of an antibiotic - but it is also the name of the class.

The advantage of penicillin is that it can kill certain types of bacteria without also killing human cells. It is easy to find toxic substances that kill every kind of cell, but much more difficult to find substances that kill only the cells that we want to kill while leaving our own cells unharmed. Of course, penicillin is not as useful as it used to be, since bacteria have evolved resistant strains.

You need to be more specific in what you're asking. Is penicillin effective against *what*? There are several types of "cillins" and two major types of "Penicillins". They are mainly used for Group A strep infections, (strep throat, tonsillitis) pneumoccocal infections (pneumonia) , rheumatic fever and some other systemic (in the body) infections (such as gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted diseases). Unfortunately, because people do not take their prescribed doses correctly and since doctors have been giving people antibiotics to people for colds and flu, which do not respond to antibiotics, a lot of the types of germs that ARE susceptible to antibiotics have become immune the "older" ones like penicillin. Now the phamaceutical companies have to come up with stronger, different types of antibiotics to kill these "super bugs" that have mutated and become resistant to drugs like penicillin. So...depending on what type of infection you have, penicillin may or may not be effective.

The short answer is 'no'. It depends on what has caused the mouth ulcer. Common causes of mouth ulcers include local trauma (e.g. biting your lip), poorly fitted dentures and viral infection. Penicillin will not help in any of these situations. Penicillins only work to treat bacterial infections. A bacterial infection is unlikely to be the cause of mouth ulcers.

Vancomycin is an antibiotic in its own class, outside of Penicillin class of drugs.

I am not sure if Cipro has penicillin in it or not, but I have been allergic to penicillin since I was little and then a few years ago found that I had the same reaction (hives) after taking Cipro...so I don't know, but that's my experience.

Can't say for a fact yes, but I am on amoxicillin for an infected c-section incision and was also given Celebrex for gallbladder attacks which is in the same drug group as ibuprofen (both non-steroid anti-inflammatory). Best thing is to ask a Dr. though as using both could increase the risk of gastrointestinal reactions.

I am no expert but I remember when I became allergic to penicillin

I ran to the emergency room later I had it happen again . My personal doctor was there and told me that ( I had whelps and rash really bad ) I really would do just as good going to Wal-Mart and buying some benadryl or Claraton so I did and it worked for me, anyway we had some puppies and one of them both of them got sick we live really far out 20 miles to the close est store nothing open at night I felt no choice but to give them a penicillin shot . And one of them became allergic eyes swollen itching. So I crushed a benadryl and wet my finger and dipped it on his tongue in as little as 30Min. he was allot better yes if you can run to the vet. They really know more. We have animals and we have treated farm animals. But I know what I did worked in a really bad case you really do need a vet.
