What year did the first nuclear meltdown occur?

There was a naturally occurring nuclear reaction in a uranium ore deposit in Oklo, Gabon some 2 billion years ago. The reaction generated heat for more than a hundred thousand years with a potential of a meltdown.

In recent history the Santa Susana Field Lab had reactor meltdown in 1959

EBR-I in Idaho had a meltdown on November 29, 1955. There were probably other meltdowns at the Idaho Reactor Test Site earlier in other test reactors (probably a good idea for a FOIA request).

How does acid rain make lake water acidic?

in atmostphere there is oxides of sulphur and nitrogen which makes atmosphere acidic , and when rains these oxides are getting mixed in it and when these rain droplets fall in lake it makes lake's water acidic.

Acid rain becomes "acid" rain as it dissolves gases from the atmosphere that form acid solutions. Normal rain is slightly acidic, but acid rain is somewhat more so. Since lakes are filled by the runoff from rain and other precipitation (like snow and sleet) you would expect that if the source was acid, the lake would be to. Rain in a forest washes leaves, where it may pick up deposits of acidic dusts from man-made sources and falls through the trees to the forest floor below. Some trickles over the ground and runs into streams, rivers, or lakes, and some of the water soaks into the soil. That soil may neutralize some or all of the acidity of the acid rainwater. This ability is called buffering capacity, and without it, soils become more acidic. Differences in soil buffering capacity are an important reason why some areas that receive acid rain show a lot of damage, while other areas that receive about the same amount of acid rain do not appear to be harmed at all. The ability of forest soils to resist, or buffer, acidity depends on the thickness and composition of the soil, as well as the type of bedrock beneath the forest floor. Midwestern states like Nebraska and Indiana have soils that are well buffered. Places in the mountainous northeast, like New York's Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, have thin soils with low buffering capacity. They also have naturally acid soils that would acidify the lakes even without acid rain helping out.

It is important to note however than many lakes that are acidic are actually that way primarily due to the acidification of the runoff as it passes through acidic organic matter (like pine needles) rather than due to acid rain. In the last 10 or 20 years scientists have discovered that many lakes that are becoming more acidic are actually returning to the natural state they were in prior to humans moving into the area, burning trees and other plants and creating alkaline runoff that neutralized the naturally acidic lakes. Other lakes are acidic because the rocks through which the water percolates contain acidifying components - so the water not only becomes "hard" as it dissolves part of the rocks, it sometimes also becomes acidic.

Is natural resource depletion a air or land pollution?

Resource depletion is an economic term referring to the exhaustion of raw materials within a region. Resources are commonly divided between renewable resources and non-renewable resources. (See also Mineral resource classification.) Use of either of these forms of resources beyond their rate of replacement is considered to be resource depletion.

What are two ways new yorkers can help the environment?

the new yorkers can help the environment by keeping the atmosphere clean

and by avoiding all sorts of pollutions like sound pollution, air pollution and land pollution.

How does the correct management of the environment minimize the spread of infection?

Due to cleanness is not a proper environment for proliferation of microorganisms on all places.

4 pollutants that cause air pollution?

1.Methane 2.Chlorofluorocarbon 3.Carbon dioxide 4.Nitrogen dioxide

Does tap water affect people sources of food water and air?

Yes, tap water can affect sources of food, water, and air. Contaminants in tap water can impact agricultural practices by affecting the quality of irrigation water used for crops, potentially leading to food safety issues. Additionally, polluted tap water can contribute to health problems for both people and animals, which can indirectly influence air quality through increased emissions from health-related activities. Overall, the quality of tap water is integral to maintaining healthy ecosystems and food systems.

What is a storm ceptor?

Stormceptor is a patented water quality structure that takes the place of a conventional manhole with in a storm drain system. Stormceptor removes free oil (TPH) and suspended solids (TSS) from stormwater preventing spills and non-point source pollution from entering downstream lakes and rivers. Key benefits of a Stormceptor include:

· Capable of removing 50% to 80% of the total sediment load when properly applied as a source control for small areas

· Removes free oil from stormwater during low flow conditions

· Will not scour or re-suspend trapped pollutants

· Excellent spill control device for commercial and industrial developments

· Easy to maintain (vacuum truck)

· STORMCEPTOR clearly marked on the cover (excluding inlet designs)

· Engineered and continually tested

· Vertical orientation therefore resulting in a smaller footprint
