Does the Pontiac Vibe with the Toyota engine have trouble with oil sludge build up oil gel?

Yes! After only 87,000km and at least 12 oil changes my engine quit on me. I had the car towed to the local GM dealer, only to find out a few days later that the engine had sludge in both the upper and lower engine. I was also advised that GM would not warranty the engine because of the sludge. I bought this car thinking it would be much better than the usual GM product, because of the Toyota engine...but was I wrong! I am presently compliling several complaints from Toyota and Pontiac owners about this problem. It seems that Toyota have have had engine design flaws that contributed to the sludge problem (engine running to hot, oil filter positionning, etc..). I have most of my maintenance records and still GM does not want to cover the motor on warranty. If you have any other information about this problem, could you forward the info?

--------

I had the valve cover off mine at 100K miles, definitely no sludge problem in there. Also, among the Vibers at forums.genvibe.com, there have not been any reported sludge problems

What maintenance can improve gas mileage?

Rotate your tires every 3,000 miles. Change the oil at that time as well. Another area to look at for improvements on gas mileage is also your air intake sensor and air filter. If your air intake sensor is dirty, it will cause your engine to change the ratio of your air to fuel mixture. I've wiped my sensor off with just a q-tip and removed what seemed to look like soot from it. It helps. Change the airfilter when you notice the sensor getting dirty. If the sensor looks real dirty, you might need to replace it. On older vehicles, I've used the sea foam product in a full tank of gas. It blows the carbs out of the engine, which makes it run more efficiently and adds life to your engine. Other things you can look at just to improve overall gas mileage: make sure you're not carrying around that extra bag of dog food you didn't haul in the night before; run your AC in moderation (put it on the mid setting instead of running it on high, then turning completely off once you're comfortable); don't drive with all the windows down to compensate for not using the AC (this causes quite an air drag on your car and you'll use more fuel to just go forward!) . Driving anything over 65 mph burns more gas (so they say), but good luck staying at that speed on the interstates where 75 mph is the speed limit and those around you are doing 90!

What causes a check engine light in cold weather to turn on for a Pontiac vibe?

How do you replace a engine control module on a 2006 Pontiac vibe?

You take it in to the dealership and have them do it for free. My 2005 Vibe's control module recently needed to be replaced and it was covered under warranty. It's an extended warranty on '04-'07 models of the Matrix/Vibe and the Carolla. It's good for 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. Check it out.

== == The Pontiac Vibe Fuel filter is located on top of the gas tank. you can access it by going thru the cargo floor hatch under the spare tire.

The access to the fuel filter in the fuel tank is by removing the bottom of the rear seat. It is not something that needs to be routinely replaced

How do you Replace high mount brake light bulb Pontiac vibe?

The process I am outlining was performed on a 2004 Pontiac Vibe 2wd.

You will need:

  • Something small to push in the rivet center pin, a key will do.
  • A new bulb, Sylvania's part number is 921 LL

Open the rear hatch and locate the plastic rivets located on either side of the hard plastic hood that forms the housing around the high mount brake light. Gently press the center of each rivet in. You will now be able to grasp the outer ring on the rivet and pull them out of the plastic hood. If the hood doesn't immediately fall off, jiggle it until it comes free. With the hood off you will see the brake light assembly.

Now, close the rear hatch and open up the glass portion only. This reveals the red taillight lense. Remove the lens by gently prying up the clips on either side. Pull out the burnt out bulb and push in a new one. Pop the lens back on and close the glass. Reopen the main hatch.

Pull back slightly the center pin from each of the plastic rivets that you pulled from the plastic hood. Line the plastic hood up with the two holes on the brake light assembly. Place an outer ring of each rivet into the two holes on the plastic cover. Then, place the pin into the center of the outer rivet ring center and press until the top of the pin is flush with the ledge of the rivet outer ring.

Much easier than the official method of removing the light body from the car, as it tends to wedge itself in.

How do you change the cabin air filter on a 2009 Pontiac Vibe?

Open the glove box, squeeze the sides in and remove the glove box (easy to re-install). Behind you will see a long horizontal rectangular hatch. Depress the plastic latch and remove the hatch. Remove old filter, clean out any loose debris, replace with new filter. Put the hatch and glove box back in and you are done.
