if you mean the colors on a pH scale then they are probably labeled: 1-14. the numbers 1-6 are acids, the lower the number the more acidic the chemical is. the number 7 means tat the chemical is neutral (this is usually water). the numbers 8-14 are base's the higher the number the more basic it is.

Sometimes it is really difficult to tell. There is often a slighly sunken area across where the positive would be that can cast a shadow, and you are not the first one to do a great deal of peering and wondering! Hold the test so there is as little shadow as possible on it or use a torch. As a last resort, you can carefully take the test apart and find the actual test strip. Usually though, even a faint positive is able to be distinguished as such. Retest in a couple of days with a fresh test if it still is a mystery.
