Blood tests are actually more accurate in recent times. However, mistakes are made. If there is any question regarding a blood test, it would be best to have a retest. If the results are the same as the first test, it is almost a certainty that the results are accurate.

If you are 42 days late, but a home test is still showing negative - and I assume the test has been taken at least twice - then it might be appropriate to consult with your doctor, but wait till day 44 (one month past last period plus two weeks) and test again.

Buy a two pack test. I always buy a store brand. They are much cheaper and work just as well. Take one test now. If you get negative or confusing results, take another a day or two after you are supposed to start your period. Then you should get a correct answer. It may be too early. It depends on the test and how much of the pregnancy hormone you are producing right now.

Probably there is some problem with your results.

It's possible that your cycle is off and you ovulated late and could be pregnant, it's more likely that your period is delayed due to stress or other physical reasons. If your period doesn't start soon and you still have a negative hpt then I would call your doctor to discuss options.

Although, most of the time, a quantative result below 5 HCG normally means that you are not pregnant, it is possible to be pregnant with a HCG of 1 during the first week or two. Over the counter pregnancy tests only detect HCG levels above 5. This has been learned from experience as I was told by my doctor that there is no way that I could be pregnant with an HCG of 1 when I thought I was 2 weeks pregnant on June 16th. Evidentally that is not always the case because I received a vaginal sonogram on August 4th that showed a 10 week pregnancy. Thus I would have been about 2 weeks pregnant on June 16th. I would be careful about taking the doctors word, trust your intuition. I have an intuition that said "I am pregnant and I don't care what any sonogram or blood test say" and yet still trusted the doctor and kept donating plasma until the pregnancy was confirmed on August 4th. Should have trusted my gut. By the way, although my HCG was 1 at 2 weeks my baby is healthy.-Dianna
