How did underground utilities start?

Underground utilities began to emerge in the late 19th century as urban areas expanded and the need for efficient infrastructure grew. Initially, cities installed sewer systems to manage waste and sanitation, followed by water supply systems. The introduction of electricity and gas lines soon followed, leading to the underground installation of these utilities to maximize space and improve aesthetics in rapidly developing urban environments. This trend has continued to evolve, with modern technologies facilitating more efficient and safer underground utility systems.

How much of the worlds rescorces does America consume?

Depends on exactly what resource.

But until very recently, the USA, with around 300million people (or 1 person in about 20 around the world) was emitting about a quarter of all the world's greenhouse gasses.

That's 25% of the emissions, from 5% of the population, or over 6 times as much as the average for the rest of the world - and that's including the rest of the developed world.

The 'ecological footprint' of the USA is about double that of the EU for about the same population, and is nearly four times that of China (which has nearly four times the population, (and so the ecologicical impact per person is just about 14 times as high in the USA, compared to China)

Currently, a key cause of deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest is making pasture for cattle, so they can be sold as beef for frozen ready meals in the USA.

When compared with other developed world economies with wide-open spaces, like Canada and Australia, transport uses about a third more fuel per mile (and creates a third more emissions per mile)

How much of the world's resources does the USA consume? A lot.

Why was load shedding implemented?

Load shedding was implemented to save money. It also saves pollution. Load shedding is what electric utilities do when there is a huge demand for electricity that exceeds the generation available. The alternative is to have a brown-out where the voltage is reduced. It costs a lot to have generators standing by just in case there is a surge of demand, and the operators of those generators expect to be paid whether they run the generators or not. An alternative is if there is a large consumer of electricity (say, a factory) that could suddenly turn off all its electricity demand, they could agree to do that on request, and it has the same benefit as adding that amount of generation to the electric grid. In fact, it's better -- as there is less demand on the wires which are often saturated at the same time. That factory has losses from shutting down its equipment and idling its workers, but if the money it gets paid is enough, then it's worth it. This is a perfect example of load shedding. There are many other cases where lots of smaller consumers agree to reduce demand on hot summer days, such as by reducing air conditioning or lighting. Someone who aggregates all these smaller cases can have the same effect as one big generator and so get the same money, and the operators of the electric grid are happy as it effectively solves the peak demand problem. Pollution can be reduced by load-shedding as well. Often, the generators that you run as a last resort are the least efficient and most polluting. If you don't need to run those because you saved energy elsewhere for the few hours of highest power demand, we all win.

Load shedding kicks in when there is more load than there is generation. It's to protect the system from a brown out, or a blackout if load is really excessive.

What is waste to energy conversion?

Waste to Energy Conversion is when you take waste (the combustible parts of household garbage, for example, that cannot be otherwise recycled) and burn it to run an electricity generator. Then you have used waste to make energy.

Where does load shedding take place?

Load shedding generally takes place in South Africa. Even today, power cuts are taking place all over the nation. This process results in load shedding.

Are ALL the uses of natural gas environmentally friendly?

Sorry to inform you but natural gas causes pollution. You have probably seen ads or articles that argue that switching from oil to natural gas would help us clean up the environment. By switching, we would be introducing less pollutants, but this is not what I would think qualifies for a "environmentally friendly" fuel. I've included some links on natural gas. Pollution can occur during exploration and production, while in storage and in the end use, typically involves burning of natural gas. In offshore production of oil, large volumes of gas are often flared, releasing CO2 to our atmosphere. Similarly, power plants will release CO2, which contributes to global warming. See attached links. You can find good information on both natural gas and global warming by searching the internet, or from books.
