The types of conflict in literature are man versus man, man versus self, man versus nature, and man versus God. These can be found in English Romanticism.

Romanticism created the concept that love and trust would defeat all of the negative forces in life. Secondly, in hindsight we can say that these ideals are naive.

Romanticism has very little to do with things thought of as romantic. It is an international artistic and philosophical movement whose key element is defining ways in which people in Western cultures thought about themselves and about their world.

The Romantic movement in English literature was a reaction against the Age of Enlightment, which stressed reason and logic. Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein, is a statement against the destructive qualities of logic and science. The Romantics believed that human emotions were extremely important, and stressed the use and depiction of emotions in their poetry. Love is sometimes associated with the Romantics, but their works express a broad spectrum of human emotions. William Wordworth's poetry, for example, often extolls the simple joys of childhood and their affect on a person's maturation. The Romantics were also deeply fond of nature, which plays a prominent role in much Romantic poetry. Much of the best Romantic poetry has a spiritual, mystical feel to it. Romanticism as a movement had its beginnings in the late 18th century and lasted to the middle of the 19th century.

In the late nineteenth century there came a rise in the working class. Middle-class workers, as well as women, gained power and began to have a larger voice in society. The middle-class started to get more political power, including starting a campaign to allow more people, including women, to be able to vote. Theatre had previously been mainly about the lives of the upper-class, and very rarely questioned problems in society or government. This was mainly because of the great control held over theatre by kings and government. Through this gained power and freedom, playwrights began to address topics that had previously been considered taboo to them. This was also the time of scientific and technological advances of Freud, Einstein, and Edison. Freud reflected on the inner-workings of the human mind, he analyzed dreams and psychological motivations. Realist playwrights used Freud's findings to create more in-depth, realistic characters than had previously been seen. Einstein's theory relativity brought about the questioning of the world around them of things that were originally thought to be fixed. All things moral and intellectual were questioned, including religion, the inner-workings of human beings, and the universe itself. Edison's electric light enabled more lighting options in theatres than had previously been available through the use of candles or gas lighting.
