What are some good things to buy for a teenager?
I second his opinion. However, there are other things to do besides gaming (though I am an avid gamer), like an actual skateboard, or a nice bike/ dirt bike or a fourwheeler (ATV). This is all, obviously, for a teen guy, unless you are buying for a tom boy. If it's for a guy, weights might help, or maybe some new shoes or a basketball or some other sports ball, if you know that he is in to that.
As per what consoles, here's the heads up. PlayStation 2's are more for the hard core gamers, like (but CERTAINLY not limited to) the final fantasy fans, with the ps3 being even more so, with the 600 dollar price tag. Xbox 360's are for the average teenager, even girls, with a lot of action games, though check the game to make sure that you aren't corrupting your child too much. Nintendo Wii's are for the more fun loving gamers, with a happy-go-lucky gameplay style, with Mario and Zelda (the latter of which is as the most mature.

if he likes funny cartoony stuff, i suggest something like Rachet and Clank or Jak and Daxter.
if you want to moniter his playing, i suggest that you go by the rating on the game.
