Recent trends are not only for smaller sizes of the cars but also for the economical ones. Electric vehicles are the most sensible solution hence the technology to produce one is becoming cheaper and more available. The main advantage is, that Electric vehicles produce 0 g/ml of any sort of emissions and recycling of the battery and other car parts will give let us rely less on the production of new plastics, metals, and substances further reducing our carbon footprint.
Probably the newest trend on a design point of view, is incorporating original fibers and flexible plastics into the horizon, moving away from the plated structure of automobiles, to more unique looking and detailed designs, for example, the BMW GINA concept that sparked a whole new trend of soon to come high end vehicles (appealing to a different crowd).

It would lend to instability. If a front wheel drive is involved, the experts say to accelerate to maintain stability. This is a no win situation as you get going faster than the road conditions allow.
If it is a rear wheel drive, the easiest thing to do is to let off the accelerator and coast to a slower speed. this is the natural way to regain control. I believe the reason most front wheel drive cars end up in the ditch when it gets slippery is because of the former. If the road is slippery and you drive automatics then you may have better control if you use a higher gear so the wheels do not spin as easy.
