At least one of the original news sources covering his story (Cornerstone Magazine) issued a retraction and basically said he was a liar when they asked for proof, then he threatened to sue them. LaVey had 2 daughters and only one son, a boy named Xerxes who was born in 1993 and has not converted to Christianity or renounced his father.

No for the most part we don't. However sometimes it is easier to at least acknowledge it. Its not likely everybody where you work is a Satanist. Its not likely all your family are Satanists either and chances are these people are going to expect something from you... even if it is only a card.
I think its relevant to add, for the most part (even for some Christians) Christmas isn't completely about the birth of Jesus. Even staunch atheists celebrate Christmas.

Satan, by definition, is the physical embodiment of all that is evil (evil for these purposes being immoral or contrary to the traits we value as humans, ie humility and charity run contrary to pride and greed etc.) for this reason it is natural to '' satanists the perceived supporters of such a source.
In contemporary society, I assume that people 'hate' satanists for the same reason they would hate drug dealers or any other kind of person who engages in activity that society at large views as 'immoral'. Immoral behaviour, or behaviour that an individual views as immoral is seen as a threat to self and society. For that reason, since most people do not value Satan as moral then it would be natural for them to ostracize or 'hate' satanists.
Also, Satanists tend to be scapegoats for immoral behaviour (murderings, the loud music the kids are into, etc) and this reinforced the 'hatred' of them.
