I have a book "Boys' Preparatory Schools: A Photographic Essay" which shows that short pants and knee socks were still very common in the 1980s. I'm less sure about today, but suspect they are still worn at many prep schools.

BUT having just returned from South Africa there are still boys' schools there that insist or allow boys to wear shorts up to school leaving age. There is a boys' school at Stellanbosch where most junior boys and about 60% of the senior boys wear shorts. Maroon blazers, grey shorts, knee socks and black shoes, with white shirts and tie. Very smart, healthy and practical!

the school uniforms are statr in japan, because the civil or when they started but I have a vague idea. Apparently in those days people felt that having school uniforms would make the children feel important like they were in some vital organisation, bring some order and discipline to the school and help the school make some profit. The idea appealed to most parents who asked the boards of schools to get children to wear school uniforms and thus the idea was born.

Some schools in Las Vegas do require students to wear uniforms. I go to a middle school in Northwest Las Vegas (Cadwallader Middle school) that does require me to wear uniforms. Uniforms feel great for the first week or so, but then become restricting, expensive, and tacky. You do not want to purposely go to or send your children to a uniform school. There is no Difference in behavior or grades.

Karate is based on older martial arts. The art comes to the world from Japan, but it's origin is in Okinawa. Okinawa was a tribute state of China and therefore the people traded goods. Martial arts made their way from China into Okinawa and developed with some differences in the different regions - Shuri and Naha. Kushanku (died 1762?) was a Ch'uan Fa kung fu master and taught Kanga Sakugawa (1733-1815). His "karate" was called "Te." He in turn taught Sokon Matsumura (1797-1889) who is credited with being the master of Shuri-Te. It was from him that Yasutsune "Anko" Itosu (1830-1916) learned Shuri-Te and became one of the most prominent masters in Okinawa. Wai XinXian (dates and style unknown) taught Seisho Aragaki (1840-1918) whose style became known as "Tode." Wei Shinzan was a Fukien kung fu master and contemporarty to Wai XinXian. It was under both of these Chinese instructors and under Aragaki that Kanryo Higaonna (1853-1915) studied and became recognized as the "Naha-Te" master.

Once Japan invaded Okinawa, they became a tribute state of Japan as well. In the early 1900's Okinawan masters began to travel to Japan to share karate. Okinawans had used several names for the art. Originally it was called "Te" "Tode" "Uchinade" or "Ryukyu Kempo." It later became more universally known as "karate." The characters used to write the word meant "Chinese hand." In 1905 Hanashiro Chomo wrote a book called "Karate Kumite" and was the first person to use the characters for karate meaning "empty hand." As the Okinawans began to teach in Japan, they used the characters meaning "empty hand" to get the Japanese public to accept the art as the Japanese hated all things Chinese. In 1930, Chojun Miyagi registered his style, Goju-Ryu, the first official style of karate with the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai - the governing body for martial arts in Japan.

School dress codes were very strict in the 1960's. Boys wore slacks, a button down shirt, and leather shoes. Jeans, sweat pants, shorts, or sneakers were not allowed at school. No hats or T-shirts. The length of their hair was also part of the dress code. A boy couldn't have his hair touch the top of his collar on his shirt.

To show proffesionalism in your appearance and Esprit de Corps. You would not likely go up to someone with his/her shirt hanging out, shoes unshined, cap on crooked and stains on the uniform for assistance. Or, maybe you would if you were in need of help and recognized that person as a US military service member who had slogged through the mud to get to you.

I think you may be reffering to the Renaissance because there was no school in the middle ages.

There were a lot of schools in the Middle Ages, and about seventy of them are still open today. I don't think they had uniforms, however. A lot of the schools were in monasteries, and the monks had uniform habits (clothes), but these were related to the monastic life, rather than the schools, and a student who was not a monk or novice would not have worn a habit, because they related to the order, not the school.
