How does retirement affect self esteem with elderly?

  • If Seniors are lucky enough to be financially stable and can travel or perhaps take up something they have always loved to do such as art or other projects; becomes active in their community then they build on that self esteem. Some Seniors are plagued with ill health and unfortunately are limited to what they can do and become depressed or bed-ridden, but a vast majority are still very active. Men in particular generally work three quarters of their life so it is difficult for some men to settle in to being around home more and this includes the wife having her husband around more often. Some retired couples may do other activities and enjoy being around their home (perhaps gardeners or golfers), but often the males or females may go back to work part-time because they miss the camaraderie of their coworkers. Often times society neglects to understand the wisdom of many of the Seniors and that they are still very useful in society if given a chance and has a tendency either to treat them like they have had a lobotomy or dismisses the fact they are even surviving and therefor it is the younger aspect of society that takes away the dignity and oppresses the elderly. The elderly still want to remain independent; keep their dignity and be useful both in the family or in any aspect of Society. It is Society that can be ignorant to the fact that just because a person is over the age of 60 they are no longer useful .. not true for most. Some companies in Canada are asking retired Seniors to come back to work to teach the younger employees their jobs in the company that Senior previously worked in. In Canada a person 70 years or older cannot be denied a job if they prove they are capable of that job and have no serious health issues. Society has to sit up and take notice of Seniors or 'elderly' as they are so often called and remind themselves that it was the elderly that made changes to make a better life for future generations and that death is not reserved for the elderly because death can occur at any age. It isn't about age when it comes to Seniors mixed in with the younger generation, but wisdom. Seniors rock!

It's always good to laugh at yourself when you make mistakes. To me, this is a way of letting yourself know that it is okay to not always take yourself too seriously and that you can make mistakes. When you laugh at yourself, you ensure yourself that things will be fine and that things will be better. When you can laugh at yourself then you won't fall to pieces when someone else dares to laugh at you. Laughing at yourself, whether internally or externally, gives you a boost of confidence. That confidence shows when you're around others.

Why does everyone think people who self-harm or try to commit suicide just want attention?

Generally? Because people come to your aid when you're experiencing that degree of mental distress. And honestly, some people do make empty threats for attention. Not that I condone it. I think that making people feel unimportant for wanting to kill themselves only perpetuates that feeling of self-hatred.

What are three ways to boost your self-esteem?

Here are 7 (:1) Think back to when you did something new for the first time.Learning something new is often accompanied by feelings of nervousness, lack of self belief and high stress levels, all of which are necessary parts of the learning process. The next time you feel under-confident, remembering this will remind you that it's perfectly normal - you're just learning! 2) Do something you have been putting off.Like writing or calling a friend, cleaning the house, tidying the garden, fixing the car, organizing the bills, making a tasty and healthy meal - anything that involved you making a decision, then following through! 3) Do something you are good at.Examples? How about swimming, running, dancing, cooking, gardening, climbing, painting, writing... If possible, it should be something that holds your attention and requires enough focus to get you into that state of 'flow' where you forget about everything else. You will feel more competent, accomplished and capable afterwards, great antidotes to low self esteem!

And while you're at it, seriously consider doing something like this at least once a week. People who experience 'flow' regularly seem to be happier and healthier.

4) Stop thinking about yourself!I know this sounds strange, but low self esteem is often accompanied by too much focus on the self. Doing something that absorbs you and holds your attention can quickly make you feel better. 5) Get seriously relaxed. If you are feeling low, anxious or lacking in confidence, the first thing to do is to stop thinking and relax properly. Some people do this by exercising, others by involving themselves in something that occupies their mind. However, being able to relax yourself when you want is a fantastic life skill and so practicing self hypnosis, meditation, or a physically-based relaxation technique such as Tai Chi can be incredibly useful.

When you are properly relaxed, your brain is less emotional and your memory for good events works better. A great 'rescue remedy'!

6) Remember all the things you have achieved. This can be difficult at first, but after a while, you'll develop a handy mental list of self-esteem boosting memories. And if you're thinking "But I've never achieved anything", I'm not talking about climbing Everest here.

Things like passing your driving test (despite being nervous), passing exams (despite doubting that you would), playing team sport, getting fit (even if you let it slip later), saving money for something, trying to help someone (even if it didn't work) and so on.

7) Remember that you could be wrong! If you are feeling bad about yourself, remember that you way you feel affects your thoughts, memory and behavior. So when you feel bad, you will only remember the bad times, and will tend to be pessimistic about yourself. This is where the tip 'Get Seriously Relaxed' comes in!

What happens if you do not take a shower for a week?

Your body will give off an unpleasant odor, as oils, grease, dirt, and sweat accumulate in your skin. Your hair will become thin and dry, as the natural chemicals in your follicles accumulate and tangle your hair (depending on the length of your hair). In other words- you'll smell. Really bad. My advice? Bathe regularly using warm water, soap, shampoo, and conditioner, and don't skip out on showers for more than two days, if you can, unless you are in a situation where you are unable to bathe.
