What are the Measurements for a Oversize Queen Size Comforter?

Twin

68 x 86 inches - No, a Twin mattress is as long as a Full mattress, and therefore should have the same length of comforter as Full (90"). So the size should be 68x90

Full

80 x 90 inches

Full/Queen

88 x 88 inches - This is the worst thing that manufacturers have done! - making a "Full/Queen" comforter too small for a Queen bed. A Queen mattress is as long a a standard King, so the comforter should be as long as a King comforter (96"). So this should be 88x96 if it can truly accommodate a Queen mattress.

Queen

86 x 94 inches - No, a Queen mattress is the same length as a King Mattress, so the comforter should be the same length as King (96). And as for width - why would a Queen comforter be narrower (86, as stated here) than a Full/Queen (88, stated above)? If it's too narrow, the blankets & sheets of the Queen bed are not covered by the comforter. A Queen comforter should be 88x96

King

110 x 96 inches

What do you do if the fabric gets eaten by the sewing machine when sewing narrow seams?

If the fabric you are sewing keeps getting caught in the sewing machine feeder (or "eaten by the sewing machine"), after you cut it out, I would suggest taking a few preventative measures:

  • When you are sewing narrow seams, keep the speed very low. Don't press on the pedal too hard, and don't try to sew too quickly.
  • If you have a serger, serge your fabric edges first. This will reinforce the edges, and keep stray threads from getting caught in the feeder.
  • If you don't have a serger, trim the edges, and make sure there aren't any loose fabric threads that could get caught in the feeder.
  • Iron your fabric. This will keep it from crinkling up and catching in the feeders.
  • If you can, move your needle as far to the right as possible. This will allow you to sew with the entire presser foot on the fabric, which will stabilize it.

What is surge stitching?

I think you mean "serging". This is the kind of stitching you see at the inside seams of store bought clothing. It is made with a special sewing machine called a "serger" that uses 3-4 threads at a time and trims the seam as it goes.

What is Bridal loop and how would it be used to sew a wedding dress?

Bridal loop is a strip of material about 1/8" wide and every 1" or so has an elastic loop. It runs down the opposite side from the buttons and the elastic loops enclose over the buttons. That was harder to explain in words than I thought it would be. I hope that helps at least a little.

Where can you purchase Daisy Kingdom fabric?

I find a lot of beautiful Daisy Kingdom fabric on eBay, iOffer, Craig'sList, and estate/yard sales. I've also found some at reasonable prices at out-of-the-way fabric stores that have had it for years and have no idea of it's value, believe it or not! Hobby Lobby and Walmart have even carried it from time to time when they get in a bolt sent from the heavens :) Be careful about the auction sites, though, as it's easy to overpay unless you pre-set yourself a spending limit. Unless you "have" to have a certain print you've got your heart set on, it's best to hold out and try winning a lower bid the next time someone auctions some off. Good Luck!

How do you measure a skirt hem?

First, you should hang your skirt on a dressform or on a "model". Then, you need to decide how long (or short) the skirt will be; this will be your hem point. The method I have used requires a yardstick and a rubberband: you sit or kneel on the floor holding the yardstick upright (the 36" mark at the bottom on the floor & the 1" mark at the top); wrap the rubberband around the yardstick at the point where the hem of the skirt is to be (for example, at the 12" mark); next, have your "model" turn bit-by-bit as you mark or pin at the hem point around the circumference of the skirt; if you are using a dressform, you will need to either turn the form manually or crawl around the form yourself. This method will give you a hem that is always level with the floor. I have included the URL of a manufactured device that works the same way as above. http://www.newarkdress.com/n107.html It is helpful to have your model or dressform elevated from the floor for your comfort.
