Sewing up the cervix keeping the baby in place long is it pain ful or harmful to the baby?

When a woman's cervix is weak (sometimes called an incompetent cervix) she is more likely to have a baby born prematurely because the cervix shortens or opens too early. In order to prevent premature labor, a woman's doctor may recommend a cervical cerclage. A cerclage is used to prevent these early changes in a woman's cervix, thus preventing premature labor. A closed cervix helps a developing baby stay inside the uterus until the mother reaches 37-38 weeks of pregnancy. Treatment for cervical incompetence is a surgical procedure called cervical cerclage, in which the cervix is sewn closed during pregnancy. The cervix is the lowest part of the uterus and extends into the vagina.

Who invented the modern hypodermic needle?

Forms of intravenous injection and infusion began as early as 1670. However, Charles Gabriel Pravaz and Alexander Wood were the first to develop a syringe with a needle fine enough to pierce the skin in 1853.

Benjamin A. Rubin invented the "Pronged Vaccinating and Testing Needle" or vaccination needle. This was a refinement to the conventional syringe needle.

In 1955, Roehr Products introduced a plastic disposable hypodermic syringe called the Monoject.

The microneedle device is a painless alternative to the needle and syringe. Mark Prausnitz, a chemical engineering professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology teamed together with electrical engineer Mark Allen to develop the prototype microneedle device, which looks like the nicotine quit smoking patch. The microneedle is made up of 400 silicon-based microscopic needles, each the width of a human hair. The tiny, hollow needles are so small, that any medication can be delivered through the skin without reaching the nerve cells that create pain. Microelectronics within the device would control the time and dosage of the medicine delivered.

Why are pin cushions in the shape of a tomato?

People used to believe that placing a ripe tomato on the mantel when first entering a new home guaranteed future prosperity. Since tomatoes were not available year-round until recently, families moving into new homes often substituted round balls of red fabric stuffed with sawdust or sand. These balls were also used as pincushions, which explains--if you ever wondered--why your grandmother's pincushion looked like a tomato.

How many yards of fabric for curtain in 84 inches?

to answer this question properly i would need to know what the pattern repeat on the fabric is and what style of heading you have chosen as the ammount will greatly vary according to those things. If you were having basic pencil pleat heading and a plain fabric (using fabric of a standard 54"width) you would need to use 1 and a half widths of fabric in each curtain making a total of 3 widths. Add 10" for hems to you r drop, making 58", multiply that by your number of widths. We work in metres here which you would need 4.5 metres which i think in yards is (rounded up) 5 yards. If you had a patterned fabric you may need more to match the patterns.

Who uses a thimble?

A seamstress, or a tailor.

Classically, today it's the seamstress and tailor but in actual other fine works were the potential of cutting and piercing the finger it is also used. Very classic thimbles are but mere metal cups that fit over the finger - some are cotts with metal/plastic/or other hard substances. Newer versions maybe all fabric with Kevlar and may be used in fine metal crafting and some jewelry making.

Thimbles are not limited to metal some are very collectible as some version may be made out of sterling silver, ivory, jade, porcelain and even glass.

Some vintage Victorian era thimbles were even decorated with scenes and or gemstones.

In bygone years needle work was a required skill of many ladies to marry there were even ladies finishing schools that did basic needle point samplers as a requirement for graduation. Then thimbles existed in all homes necessity of needle work was due to most clothing was home sewn and store bought ready made clothing a rare commodity unlike today. Plus mending clothing such as darning holes in socks was a very necessary economic commodity. Again as ready made clothing was very costly and labored work the thimble was once common place in every house hold prior to the industrial revolution.

What is a sewing bobbin?

A sewing bobbin is a small spool of thread that goes underneath the needle and sewing platform. It provides the lower thread for the sewing machine. Different models of machines use different bobbins, but most machines require you to create the bobbin yourself.

If you'd like to see a picture of a typical sewing machine bobbin, visit the "related link" below.
If you look at a diagram of the way a sewing machine works, you can see that when the needle goes down to the bobbin, the bobbin thread is pushed around the upper thread, and that is how the two pieces of fabric are joined together.

The upper thread goes along the top of the seam, and the bobbin thread goes along the bottom of the seam.
