How do you get nice sharp corners when turning two sewn pieces of fabric together?

Well, the obvious answer is to stitch right to the corner and stop with the needle down in the fabric, pick the presser foot up and pivot the fabrics 90 degrees then continue stitching. When the seam is finished, clip the corner off and turn the fabrics right side out. BUT, THIS WILL NOT GIVE YOU A NICE SHARP CORNER!

The correct way to do it is to stop stitching with the needle down in the fabric just before reaching the corner, pick the presser foot up and pivot the fabrics 45 degrees and take 2 stitches that are 1 mm long (yes, you have to adjust the stitch length). Stop with the needle down in the fabric and pivot the fabrics another 45 degrees. Be sure to readjust your stitch length and continue stitching. When the seam is finished, clip the corner off and turn the fabric right side out.

The "rule" to remember that stitching a sharp corner will result in a blunt corner, but stitching a blunt corner will turn perfectly square.

Practice this on scraps by using a thin leaded pencil to mark your stitching lines so you'll know exactly where you'll need to stop for the corners.

How do you use vintage adjustable buttonhole scissors?

Buttonhole scissors have an adjustable screw that limits the length of a single cut. To use the scissors, first practice on a piece of scrap fabric. With a fabric marker or other pen, draw a line on the fabric that matches the length of the buttonhole desired. Slowly cut along the line until reaching the end, then tighten the set screw. Practice making a few more cuts, loosening or tightening the set screw as needed to calibrate the maximum length of cut the scissors will make.

Most buttonhole scissors have a notch near the hinge that will allow fabric to pass through and remain uncut.

The pair of button hole scissors I own has a measuring scale on the lower blade so it is easy to adjust the screw to set your cut. On a shirt you want the button holes to go in a top to bottom cut line. You mark the midpoint of all your holes and make a fold at a right angle to the line of your cut on that midpoint. Then you cut on the fold so that you are cutting through 2 layers but when you are done and unfold you have 1 straight cut. Since mine are marked with a scale, if I set it at 1/4 inch then when I unfold the fabric I have a 1/2 inch cut.

What are the disadvantages of self enclosed seam?

A self-enclosed seam is one in which the fabric is folded over twice, so that the raw edge is not exposed. Some disadvatages may be:

  • It can be a bit bulky, as it creates 3 layers of fabric
  • It shortens the hemline more, so you have to account for that while cutting your fabric
  • It can create a weight at your hemline, which may make the fabric drape improperly

What is a hand-wheel on a sewing machine?

The main purpose of a hand wheel on a sewing machine is to slowly turn the needle by hand. This gives you control to position fabric under the needle and align fabric to guides built into the machine.

On older model sewing machines the hand wheel has an inner wheel that is loosened to allow the machine to wind a bobbin while disengaging the needle area of the sewing machine. This is done by holding the outer wheel and turning the inner wheel.

Newer electronic machines have a simple hand wheel that does not have a disengaging feature. This feature is built into the machine when you move the bobbin toward the bobbin winding brake.

There is a bracket you can remove on the top of the machine, under the cover. The bracket is used for blind stitching. Once the bracket is removed, just set your machine to blind stitch which will center the sewing needle. The needle will no longer move from center as long as you removed the right bracket. What is the value of The Lightning Portable Adding Machine?

I've seen the Lightning at a local antique shop for $60.00 USD. It was the grey one that adds and subtracts. It was just the machine without the bakelite stand, no box and no instuction booklet. I have one that has the box, stand, instruction booklet and guarantee certificate. The only thing mine is missing is the metal stylus. I'm estimating this one to be worth $80.00 to $100.00. (There is a price written on the box of $14.98) Hope this helps.
