Sickle-Cell Disease

Sickle-cell disease is a genetic blood disorder wherein the red blood cells are irregularly shaped due to the blood’s lowered oxygen tension. This irregularity may result in chronic anemia, serious infections, painful conditions, damage to organs and death.

538 Questions

Is sickle cell an dominant or recessive?

Sickle cell anemia is an autosomal recessive disorder. It can result from two carriers having a child together.

What component of blood is impacted by sickle cell anemia?

Red Blood Cells. It is called

sickle cell because some of the red blood cells

are long and shaped like sickles. Although sickle

cell disease primarily affects African Americans,

it is also found in Hispanics, Italians, Greeks and

people of Mediterranean descent.

Is it safe for someone with sickle cell to have a baby?

Answer

As you already must know Sickle Cell disease is genetic, but the GOOD NEWS is there is no known risk that babies may develop sickle cell disease.

It's a good idea to first check with a genetic specialist and make your decision from there.

Good luck!

Will a tattoo affect sickle cell disease?

No, tattoos will not effect the disease. Just be sure to take your regular antibiotics if needed to prevent any infections.

What is the common name for sickle cell anemia?

It is a genetic disorder.

However...

It is also a protection against malaria.

For example, if a person were born in an area where malaria is present, he or she would likely die from the disease, unless he or she inherited 1 sickle cell gene.

Malaria viruses reproduce in the red blood cells. The parent virus invades a cell, and uses the cell as a host to grow more viruses.

With 1 sickle cell gene, malaria viruses that invade a red cell are quickly destroyed, since the red cell collapses, preventing the virus from reproducing.

But with 2 sickle cell genes, red cells collapse too easily; just a bruise can cause someone to become anemic when too many red cells collapse.

In the real world, people with no sickle cell genes died from malaria. People with 1 sickle cell gene survived. People with 2 sickle cell genes died from sickle cell anemia.

It was natures way of assuring that at least half of the population survive, but it is certainly a difficult thing to live with today, now that we can more easily treat malaria.

Is sickle cell disease more common in boys or girls?

The incidence of sickle cell disease is equal in both men and women.

However, it is believed that men who have the disease experience worse symptoms than women with the disease.

A possible reason for this is the role of oestrogen in the female body. Oestrogen helps stimulate the production of nitric oxide. Scientists believe that nitric oxide has a key role to play in reducing the symptoms of a sickle cell crisis as it dilates blood vessels, giving the sickle shaped cells more room to pass through the vessels, preventing blockages which is the cause of sickle cell crisis.

Do you have to be born with sickle cell anemia?

If you were not born with this condition then you will not develop it during your life.

The condition is generally inherited as it is a genetic mutation. However, it is possible that the mutation could spontaneously happen in any baby.

The reason why this (sometimes fatal) condition has persisted in certain African populations is because it imparts a resistance to malaria.

If malaria were eliminated how might the frequency of the sickle-cell allele change over time?

Since people with the sickle cell allele trait are resistent to malaria, if malaria were eliminated there would be no change in the frequncy of sickle cell allele. This is because the presense of malaria does not have an affect on patients with the sickle cell allele trait.

How do you type the hammer and sickle symbol?

To type the hammer and sickle symbol (☭), you can use the Unicode character by entering "U+262D" in a compatible application, or by using a character map tool to copy and paste it. On Windows, you can also type it by holding down the "Alt" key and entering "9763" on the numeric keypad. For Mac users, you can use the Character Viewer by searching for "hammer and sickle."

What is the compared shape of a red blood cell to that of a sickle cell?

The red blood cells have a sickle shape, hence the name. They receive this shape from a protein in normal blood cells that is mutated. They carry less blood and block veins and capillaries easily.

When do the symptoms of sickle cell anemia appear?

If you have sickle cell anemia and already know it, then it wil lbe pretty easy to tel lwhen the symptoms show themselves. I don't have it myself but people with sickle cell apparently go through a lot of pain when a sickle cell gets stuck in a blood vessel and causes a clot; there isn't a cure, just doctors can give stuff to make the pain less but not totally go awayunless maybe they knock you unconscious. Also people with sickle cell have more trouble with sports and activites since sickle cells can't carry as much oxygen as normal ones. I'm sorry, but that's all the symptoms I know...

What does Hammer and sickle mean?

They were used by the Supreme Soviet as a reflection of the proletarian ideology they supposedly adhered to (although not so much in practice). Marx believed that the workers (represented by the tools they used - the hammer and sickle) would one day rise up and seize the means of production, and from this would gain control and create a worldwide single Communist state.

The mutant allele causing sickle-cell anemia is found at high frequency mainly due to?

Sickle cell anemia is found in high frequency because it is a codominant mutation. It only requires one allele for the gene to manifest.

Why are people with sickle cell trait resistant to malaria?

Not sure if this is right but could it be because the blood cell does not contain enough oxygen for the parasite to survive?

Why do sickle cell anemia cause so many problems?

A sickle cell is a malformed red blood cell. It is caused by a mutated gene inherited from one or both parents. If inherited from both parents the red cells are very malformed, causing sickle-cell anaemia. This is a serious illness, causing weakness and shortness of breath and often leading to an early death.

Mutations like this are usually steadily removed from the gene pool because those with it tend to have fewer children. The sickle-cell gene remains in the gene pool because those who get it from only one parent have a slightly deformed red-cell. This causes only limited problems for the bearer, and has one large advantage - it makes the red-cell taste nasty to the malaria parasite. In other words, it protects against malaria which is otherwise often fatal.

In areas where malaria is endemic it is common to find the sickle cell gene in about 15% of the population. When Africans came to the USA as slaves the gene came with them. However, malaria has never been common in the US, and the percentage of sickle-cell gene in black Americans has decreased steadily.
