Slugs and Snails

Characterized by their shell and slow movement, snails are a common garden dweller and even a delicacy in some countries. Snails without shells are called slugs.

Are snails smart?

Hmmmm...., in my opinion, garden snails aren't the smartest animals in the world. You see, if you poke them when they are asleep (like when they are in their shells), shouldn't they think a predator is trying to eat them and should go inside their little shell even more ( since I got them from the wild and they are not captive at all). However, the cute not-so-smart garden snails poke their heads out of their shell. If I was a predator, I would've easily eaten him!

However, I think water snails (you know, the ones that live in water and that are sold in petstores?) are a bit smarter, depending on which. When i was in kindergarden, we got this really active water snails and put them in our aquarium with the fish. Then my mom left the top open. No problem eh? Wrong! The snails crawled out of the aquarium and when I returned home from school I saw two dried up water snails under our dinner table. That was the kind of water snail I bought when I was in kindergarden (you never know what kind of water snail I could've bought, you know). Last week, I bought two Mystery Snails, and they are smarter. They do NOT climb out of the water. They have these weird sticking out thingys (I know, not good language) and when it touches the surface of the water, they turn back and go down. Ah, smarter. When they go down they usually slip and fall off, but that doesn't mean they're stupid or anything.

I hope this information I got from experience has helped you!

How do snails move?

Snails move by contracting its body muscles and move along the surface with this gooey thing called "slime".It moves along the surface so smoothly and it leaves a little trail behind,so it doesn't have any problem traveling. That is how the snail generate its power of motion and across the surface like that.

How does a snail move?

Snails move by alternating body contractions with stretching, with a proverbially low speed (1 mm/s is a typical speed for adult Helix lucorum [1]). They produce mucus in order to aid locomotion by reducing friction. The mucus also reduces the snail's risk of injury.

Why are snails both male and female?

snails are both males and females because they have a female uterus and oviduct and ovaries and they also have male testis and spermduct. That is the only thing i can really tell you. We will prolly never know exactly why they are this way. This is the way that God made them and we should just leave it at that. Snails have both male and female organs so they are able to reproduce without a mate. This may seem like a pointless answer but there is a difference in reproducing and creating genetic diversity. Genetic diversity is achieved when two snails mate together. Now how which one "plays" male and which one is female when they do breed is quite thought provoking.

How do snails help earth?

Snails help the Earth by breaking down organic matter, which aids in nutrient recycling and soil aeration. They also serve as a food source for other animals, contributing to the ecosystem's biodiversity.

A scientist is working with bursatella leachii a sea slug that lives in an interidal habitat how much did sea slugs move I have questions and a graph if someone with help?

Sea slugs like Bursatella leachii typically move slowly using muscular contractions called peristalsis. The distance they move can vary depending on factors like food availability, environmental conditions, and reproductive behavior. If you have questions about the movement patterns of sea slugs and a graph to analyze, a scientist or researcher specializing in marine biology or oceanography would be best suited to help you interpret the data.

Is salt kills slugs a topic or a hypothesis?

"Salt kills slugs" is a hypothesis, not a topic statement.

Do snails breathe through gills?

No, snails do not breathe through gills. They breathe through a lung-like structure called a pallial lung, which allows them to extract oxygen from the air. Some species of aquatic snails may have gills, but they still primarily rely on the pallial lung for respiration.

When do water snails lay eggs?

Water snails typically lay eggs in the warmer months of the year, as the eggs require a stable temperature to develop. Depending on the species, water snails may lay eggs in clusters or individually, often attaching them to underwater plants or other structures.

What does a lettuce sea slug eat?

Lettuce sea slugs are herbivores and primarily feed on algae, particularly species of green algae. They possess chloroplasts from their algae-rich diet, which enables them to perform photosynthesis to some extent. Occasionally, they may also feed on small crustaceans or invertebrates.

What would most likely prevent this fish from becoming an invasive species?

The fish's inability to survive and reproduce in the new environment, lack of suitable habitat, presence of natural predators or competitors, or effective management strategies such as early detection and rapid response programs would likely prevent it from becoming an invasive species.

How often should a snail drink?

You don't need to put a water bowl in the cage.

Just moisturize the tank 2 times a day.

Also make sure it is only rain water.

How big is a sea butterfly?

Sea butterflies are small, planktonic sea snails that typically range from 1 to 5 centimeters in size, depending on the species. They are known for their delicate, transparent shells and wing-like appendages that help them glide through the water.

What is the most interesting experiment involving snails?

Testing what snails eat is always interesting! Put a snail in the middle of a plate surrounded by foodoptions(to make it a fair test have it equal distance to all options). Then observe what it eats and even how it eats.
I've seen them eat: lettuce, tomatoes, apple, kalamata olives, string cheese, melon, and pickles! I'm sure you could test just about anything.

Another eating related activity is to mix corn starch with water in your hand, put the snail in the "food" and then feel the snail's radula eating the corn starch.

How do you care for a pregnant snail?

The first thing to do once your water snail has given birth is FEED THE BABY SNAILS!!If the baby snails do not eat within the first 12 HOURS they will soon die.The next thing you should do is to separate the babies from the parents, THE PARENTS WILL EAT THE BABIES!Take really good care of your babies and they can live up to a few years. Also, ask your friends if they want a few snails, OR you could try to create a snail farm (see if you can make a new breed!) snails are really great pets and don't need much caring! Also something that's really important: DONT OVER FEED!!!Your snail will like goldfish flakey food (mine do!) or Hikari Algae Wafers are also tasty to them.Just remember show your snails lots of care!

Do you lose the same amount of gas if you go faster than if you went slower?

You lose more when you go faster: when you go faster the amount of friction increases and thus the amount of energy you lose increases.

What does ramshorn snail feed on?

What is the life cycle of a sea slug?

Sea slugs typically start as eggs laid by adult slugs, then hatch into larval stages before becoming juveniles. As they grow, they go through metamorphosis and develop into adults capable of reproduction. Some species of sea slugs have complex life cycles involving multiple stages and hosts.

Where have the snails gone when you find empty shells?

When you find empty snail shells, it's likely that the snails have died or been eaten by predators. Snails are known for their slow movement and vulnerable nature, making them easy targets for other animals looking for a meal.

Are slug herbivores?

Yes, slugs are herbivores. They typically feed on plant material like leaves, fruits, and vegetables by scraping the surface with their radula, a specialized feeding structure.

Why is the air at the top of a mountain hard to breathe?

The air at the top of a mountain has lower oxygen levels due to the decrease in atmospheric pressure at higher altitudes. This makes it harder to breathe because our bodies require more oxygen when the air is thinner. This can lead to symptoms of altitude sickness.

Can a sea snail live in a fish bowl of rooting house plants?

No, sea snails are marine animals and need a saltwater environment to survive. Placing a sea snail in a fishbowl with house plants in freshwater would not provide the necessary conditions for its well-being. It is important to provide proper habitat and care for sea snails to ensure their health and longevity.

What is salt marsh plants carnivores?

In the Maritime provinces, the main ingredients of salt marshes are a constant supply of sediment, a sheltered spot, and an astonishing grass called Salt-water Cord-grass. In Newfoundland and Labrador this grass is replaced by other salt marsh plants. Once established, the plants encourage more sediment to settle at an even faster rate. Like all good turf-forming grasses, cord-grass sends out underground stems, called rhizomes, which eventually extend and form new clumps of grasses. These clumps allow the tidal currents to slow down enough to cause sediment, brought in by the tides from the ocean and the estuary, to settle. As plants build up and decompose on top of each other, a peat-like sediment develops, building up the marsh.
